Publicity Program reviewed, starting March 30th with a pancake breakfast to
be held in Ampex Cafeteria, buses providing for shuttle service from various
points in theCity, besides being on display thereafter at strategic locations
throughout the City.
Committee recommended that Council adopt the bus fares and routes as proposed
by Resolution, and accept the six vehicles by motion, subject to the execution
of an amendment by Minibus extending a warranty to cover the equipment.
Councilman Henderson expressed her concern for lack of bus service to the
trailer park areas and other areas of the City not being planned for at this
initial stage, but accepted fact routes would be continually reviewed for im-
provement or expansion. She also suggested that a city department or personnel
be designated and assigned the responsibility of maintaining public relations
and receiving and answering citizens' questions and comments. City Manager
advised during this beginning stage he would suggest his office be designated
as the contact point. Councilman Keckley, as member of the Committee, made
further comments concerning considerations which were given, and to be still
studied for improvement, such as bus fares, improved and expanded routing
after operation trial and errors discovered. He also felt it noteworthy that
the buses now to be delivered with their smaller wheel base would lower steps
and make easier loading and unloading by the handicapped and senior citizens.
Councilman Henderson discussed setting bus fares for high school students at
$.10 rather than the $.15 proposed. Councilman Petersen replied this had
been discussed thoroughly and it was recommended that fare be set at $.15 in
the beginning with view of it being in best interest of City economically and
also easier to reduce if desired later, than to increase them.
Mrs. Artie Morgan, 34 Center st., thanked Council and
Committee for a job well done in their implementation
of this bus service for the City. She stated she had
previously questioned a possible extension of the bus
service to include Oakwood Drive to El Camino.
Councilman Petersen advised this area would be considered as a possibility
later, but might jeopardize time scheduling planned for initial service.
Curt Hoffineister, 1026 -16th Avenue, asked how to judge
the age in distinguishing teenagers from those older
in charging fares, and asked for consideration of lower
rates for senior citizens.
Councilman Petersen stated this had been discussed and possibly student
body cards would be required. He outlined how fares had been recommended by
the Committee after a thorough review of all phases.
Councilman Keckley moved to accept the bus equipment, subject to the execution
of an amendment extending a warranty to cover theequipment changes, seconded by
Councilman Rosselli. City Manager advised Staff concurred in the recommendation
of the Council's Transportation Committee to accept the buses as now proposed, as
_G
Nag P_5'68
