residents in the Shores next Fall.
He described the Marina Park which they are developing as a "window" to the
project, showing an illustration of the landscaping, sales pavilion, boat
storage facilities, etc. Mr. Wynn introduced Mr. Wm. Hedley, Architect, who
described the first broad overall concept and then the details of the Marina
Park entrance. He described the sales pavilion building which will add to
the parklike atmosphere. He stated automobile parking will be broken into
sectors and the parking will be buffered by planting and other landscaping
devices. City Manager stated that this design has been approved by the Plan-
ning Commission. Estimate of the cost to Leslie was given as $300,000.
Mr. William Rogers described the activities of the Urban Design Committee which
he stated is a unique device and is being watched by many other communities as
an effective tool. He stated further that the Urban Design Committee is work-
ing on their Manual, particularly with street furniture design and street light-
ing.
He stated in answer to a question by Councilman Henderson, that the Committee
is recommending use of the modified cube electrolier, one of those that has been
on display near our Sewage Treatment Plant.
In answer to further questions, it was stated that all of the recommendations
of the Urban Design Committee will be submitted to the Council as a part of the
final specifications for the development. Councilman Bury raised the question
of the amount of lighting given by the recommended electroliers. Mr. Rogers,
stated the Committee preferred the lower lights in greater quantity of electo-
liers instead of the higher brighter luminaires. He stated the maintenance costs,
in their opinion, would be less, and would maintain a residential atmosphere.
However, a different kind of light will be used for parkways and intersections.
Councilman Henderson questioned the quoted $18,000 estimated cost of the Urban
Design Manual, plus printing and travel time, and source of the financing pro-
posed. City Manager advised Manual still being compiled but would be presented
to Council for a full discussion when ready to be approved. He advised Manual
proposed to set the tone and provide guidelines which will continue the theme of
the development throughout the project to preclude future possibilities of dif-
ferent themes being developed which would be adverse to policies. Manual would
also serve as a brochure for those interested in the area, such as private
residential, commercial, and industrial. He advised precise allocation of
funding had not yet been worked out completely, but that it would be a District
benefit and when presented to the Council an exact accounting recommendation would
be made for providing the funding.
Mr. Charles Wynn, Project Manager for Leslie Properties, Inc., advised of the
increasing national publicity being focused on Redwood Shores. He also advised of
APA 1 '66
