MATTERS OF COUNCIL INTEREST
a. Councilman Claire accompanied Police Officer Kevin Dolezal on Friday night
patrol, March 30th, and reported on the outstanding service our police
officers provide and the dangerous nature of the job. Councilman Claire also
reported on the Redwood City K -9 unit and described ' "Karlo" as an invaluable
asset.
b. Councilwoman Buchan accompanied Police Officer Steve', Dowden on Friday night
patrol, March 30th, and echoed Councilman Claire's remarks giving high praised
to the Redwood City Police Department and urging Council to consider acquiring
more K -9 units in the near future.
c. Councilman Murray presented report on the San Mateo County Board of
Supervisors meeting on March 27th regarding the proposed new jail site.
Initially 20 sites were proposed and through process elimination 3 sites
were considered: Mission Road in South San Francisco, Cemetery site in Colma
and Ticor site in Redwood City. There is a State grant of $9.5 million for a
new jail and the balance would be funded through a surcharge on fines and
forfeitures. Councilman Murray found the financial and economic analysis
report by consultants Kuelbelbeck and Associates troubling. It based its
conclusion that the Ticor site would produce cost savings to the County by
allowing the closure of other facilities currently in operation; but this same
cost analysis could be applied to the other two site as well and would
equalize the cost of all three sites. The Board of upervisors voted 3 -2 in
favor of staff to: 1) to complete work on Facility aster Plan; 2) work with
Redwood City on a mutually acceptable way to replace the existing Main Jail in
the Hall of Justice; and 3) develop a JPA with North County cities to study
new booking facility. Councilman Murray advised that County Manager Maltbie
committed the County to building "adequate parking" For Redwood City.
d.
