ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
None
---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - - - - --
MATTERS OF COUNCIL INTEREST
5. Report re efforts to assist San Mateo County Food Bank
(101 -03 )
Councilman Greenalch referred to letter from San Mateo County Food Bank of
March 21, 1988 describing cutbacks in the Temporary Emergency Food Assistance
Program and asked for Council support for HR 4060, the Emergency Hunger
Relief Act of 1988.
M /S: Greenalch /Laberge to recommend support of the Emergency Hunger
Relief Act of 1988 (HR 4060) which would continue the TEFAP funding through
next fiscal year, and to advise local legislators and Regional Director of
San Mateo County Food Bank of this support.
Carried unanimously by voice vote.
6. Chamber of Commerce PAC activities
MINUTE ORDER NO. 88 -54
Councilman Bri tschgi , expressed his concern about the mailer sent to voters
by the Chamber of Commerce Political Action Committee, as it was inaccurate
and misleading, and an inappropriate use of Chamber funds. Councilman
Bri tschgi objected to the Chamber endorsing a slate of candidates while it
had a fiduciary arrangement with the City, regretted the tone of the
Chamber PAC mailer, and expressed concern that a great deal of IMPAC funding
came from pro- Sequoia Medical Office Building supporters, turning this
important campaign process into a one -issue election, when there are many
issues to be considered over the next four years. Councilman Britschgi asked
the Mayor to write to the Chamber and ask them to evaluate their PAC policy.
MEMO 4/11/88
Vice Mayor Chandler, stated that members of the Chamber of Commerce have
millions of dollars invested in the city, and the Chamber must be interested
in and get involved with local government. The Vice Mayor stated as long as
money received from agreements with the city is earmarked for specific
expenditures, other expenditures made by the Chamber are none of the city's
business, and other city supported groups such as Neighborhood Associations,
SE IU, and the firefighters association have entered politics by supporting
candidates and /or issues and the Chamber should not be singled out.
Councilman Stanqel , expressed dismay at the flyer from the "Citizens for
Better Government" which is also full of mi statements and inaccuracies, and
stated that both these flyers should not be part of campaigns in Redwood
City.
Reg.Mtg.
4/4/88
Page 3
MINUTE BOOK NO. 48
Page No. 16
