Item No. 1 (continued) <br />Diane Howard, 907 Katherine, health professional, spoke in support of the <br />ordinance suggesting it could be strengthened by not allowing smoking in <br />restaurants. Mrs. Howard recommended placing a "No Smoking" measure on the <br />November 1988 el ecti cn ballot to ask citizens their preference. <br />Gene Jennet, Chairman of the Bo4rd of the Veterans of San Mateo County, <br />stated his concern about loss of revenue if smoking is not allowed at bingo <br />games, saying that 75% of the players are smokers. <br />Nancy Johnson, 737 Redwood Avenue, said that most bingo players are smokers, <br />that she is concerned about individual rights and favors a ballot measure on <br />the subject . <br />Ver qi 1 Koch, 1123 King, objected to the ordinance on the basis of equal <br />rights and suggested the regulations will be a burden to small businessmen. <br />Geri S. Mayers, 2303 Broadway, read a statement against the Ordinance, noting <br />that sales of cigarettes are legal and contribute to tax revenues. Ms. <br />Mayers suggested enforcement will be difficult and would tie up the courts. <br />( See page 4 paragraph 1 ) <br />Marie Rickes, 3015 East Bayshore, retired San Mateo County employee, reported <br />that after the County adopted the present smoking policy, she was forced to <br />leave her desk frequently in order to go to the permitted smoking area, <br />thereby reducing her productivity. She pointed out that smokers and non- <br />smokers often dine together and questioned the need for regulation in <br />restaurants. <br />Sandra O'Connell, San Mateo County Health Alliance and American Heart <br />Associ ati cn , spoke i n f avor of the ordi na nce, noti ng that ri ghts of smokers <br />are protected, but it should not occur at the expense of others. <br />Linda Anderson, 673 College, Menlo Park, Pulmonary Nurse Specialist, Sequoia <br />Hospital, said that she cares for patients with chronic lung disease, noting <br />that many people have adverse effects from smoke and their rights should be <br />considered also. Ms. Anderson cited results of studies which indicate <br />"secondhand smoke" is equally harmful. <br />Sharon Shnell- Hobbs, 223 Cypress Point Drive, Mountain View, Pulmonary Nurse <br />Specialist, Sequoia Hospital, reported that most of her patients are victims <br />of smoking and urged Council to protect the public health through adoption of <br />the ordinance. <br />John Novak, owner of Gypsy Cellar Restaurant, reported he has installed a <br />"smoke eater" which is effective in rEmovi ng smoke from his bar and <br />restaurant.
