r <br />ar- <br />s <br />F <br />u, <br />so that the pipe will bear equally upon it for the whole of its length. <br />Laying. <br />-III- <br />At the time of laying the bells and spigots shall be truly adjusted so at to give a <br />uniform lead -space all around,and the lead must completely fill the rabbet in the bell end <br />of the pipe,and must be caulked securely,and properly,into place. The depth.of the lead <br />must be one and one-half (1j) inches at least. The gasket must be of oakum,twisted and <br />rammed. tightly into place. <br />Work to be performed 1n such a manner so.as.not to require the shutting off of the <br />water for more than three (3) hours for any one day. The contractor must notify water -con- <br />sumers on any sts&eet before shutting off the water thereon. <br />Handling. <br />-IV- <br />The contractor shall be held liable for all damage to material in handling.. No <br />pipes or castings shall be laid which are defective,or Which have injured in handling. <br />-V- <br />Precaution. <br />The contractor must provide sufficient lights and safety -guards to protect the <br />public from injury to 'person or property during both day and night-time,and the contractor <br />Will be field respibnsible for any such injury occuring during the progress of,the work,and <br />until the acceptance of the same. <br />Cleaning. <br />-VI- <br />The pipe must be clean and free from dirt before laying. =Every open end of pipe <br />must be plugged before leaving work at night. <br />Water-pipes. <br />-VII- <br />11 <br />All branches, valves, hydrants and pipe connections muat be ,placed as the SuperiR-I <br />tendent of streets directs. Care shall be taken not to interfere with existing water and <br />sewer pipes,and the contractor must make good all damage, to such pipes occasioned by his <br />work. <br />-VIII- <br />Test. <br />Before being accepted therpipe system shall be subjected to a pressure of one hundred <br />(100) pounds per square inch,which shall be kept on as long as the Superintendent of street <br />shall deem neeessary,and. any faults,leaks or defects must be made good by the contractor at <br />his own expense. If any of these defects are due to defective material furnished by part- <br />ies other than the contractor laying the pipe,an allowance will be made for the actual cost <br />of such repairs. <br />_IX_ <br />Measurements. <br />The measurements shall be the actual linear measurement along center line of <br />pipe laid,lncluding all valves and branches.
