Letter ordered filed. <br />/� After f i avi "of-Px�k�licati�n, Ordinance No. 386, calling a special election, <br />etc., was unanimously adopted, on motion of Councilman Christensen, seconded by <br />Councilman Eva. <br />J. C. Chastain spoke to the Council about the alleged gambling practices by the <br />Redwood Theatres, reading from the Penal Code to substantiate his claim that <br />their practices were illegal and constituted a lottery. In this connection, the <br />City Attorney reported that he had not visited the theatres but was of the opinion <br />that they were operating these devices illegally and that he had taken the matter <br />up with the District Attorney who would have to prosecute if any action were <br />taken. The Attorney was instructed to bring back to the Council a report after <br />seeing the District Attorney and also to investigate about the hanging of banners <br />around the marquee. <br />Taking up again the matter of the request of the Gilmore Oil Company for a definite <br />conveyance of whatever right and title the City might have in the 10 x 50 ft. <br />strip of land now held by the O£ferman Estate, Councilman Eva proposed, seconded <br />by Councilman McNulty, that the City authorize the City Attorney to quit claim <br />to Otto Offerman the parcel of land in question 10 ft. wide more or less by 50 ft. <br />long more or less, facing on Middlefield Road, and authorizing the Mayor and the <br />Clerk to sign such deed. Unanimously carried. <br />To dispose of the question of what was to be done with the construction at 712 Brewster <br />Avenue (Mr. Gordon), it was decided on motion of Councilman McNulty, seconded by <br />Oouneilmair.Eva, that Mr. Gordon be asked to abate the violation of this ordinance <br />and remove whatever construction was placed there by him contrary to ordinance, <br />Councilman Fletcher voting "No". <br />The Treasurer was asked to write the Redwood City Branch of the American Trust Company <br />to see if the bank would care to have any of the city's inactive funds. This, on <br />motion of Councilman McNulty, seconded by Councilman Jones. <br />There arose further discussion concerning the use of the City 1W.1 by political or- <br />ganizations and it was finally decided, on motion of Councilman Fletcher, seconded <br />by Councilman Christensen, that before any permission be granted to use the hall <br />by any national, state, county or local partisan political organization, application <br />would have to be brought before the Council at least two weeks prior to the meeting <br />of said organization. Motion carried, with Councilmen Cores and McCarthy voting °N011. <br />The condition of Beech Street, crossing the Southern Pacific tracks, was explained to <br />the Council and the Manager was asked to take up the matter with the Railroad <br />Company to see if the crossing could be improved as it constituted a considerable <br />hazard at present. The Manager was also asked to call to the attention of the <br />jCompany the practice or necessity of freight trains holding up the traffic at the <br />Jefferson Avenue crossing. Councilman Fletcher was asked to communicate further <br />with Mr. A. T. Mercier about traffic signals.
