Chris-
tensen, J. M. Eva, E. A. Fletcher, R. N. Jones, G. W. McNulty, and City Clerk, B. E.
j
Myers. Absent: None.
i ! The minutes of the meeting of April 19 and adjourned meeting ofril 26 1
i [
Ap , 937, were •approved
on motion of Councilman Christensen, seconded by Councilman Hohn.
i The City Attorney presented a letter from Ernest A. Wilson, Attorney of San Mateo, concerning
a
k proposed ordinance to be drawn by Mr. Wilson in which there would be set up franchise
i
z
taxes applying to public utilities. Objection was made to paying outside attorneys
when the City Attorney was qualified to do the. same work satisfactorily. Finally, on
I motion of Councilman Eva, seconded by Councilman McNulty, the City Attorney was instructed
1
to frame a franchise ordinance.
The City Manager presented communication including a letter from C. G. Uhlenberg, Clerk of
1 the Redwood City Grammar School District, in which the Grammar School Trustees suggested
i !
1 that the City buy the Central School Building at a price of $85,000, and make the building
over into a City Hall, The Manager indicated that the total cost including alterations,
etc,, would be approximately $105,000. He showed that there would be a possibility of
I
getting a P.W.A. Grant for a new City Hall which might in that event cost the City about
r-
I + $144,000.00. No action was taken other than asking Councilmen Eva and Christensen to
t q investigate and make further report.
i At a previous meeting there was presented a letter by the City Manager to the Planning
i
f Commission in which he outlined the probable cost of extending Stambaugh Street to
Jefferson Avenue. The Planning Commission considered the project worthy of consideration
I '
and so informed the Council. The matter was taken up at this meeting. On motion of
Councilman Eva, seconded by Councilman Jones, -the Mayor was asked to appoint a committee
to work with the Eastside Improvement Association to ascertain what, if anything, could
be done. The Mayor appointed Councilmen Hohn and McNulty.
1
Roscoe Wyatt, of the Chamber of Commerce appeared and presented the following letter concerning,
the proposed Harbor celebration.
Gentlemen:
1 Reference is made to the request of the City that•the
R
Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce make a recommends -
tion as to the use of City advertising Rinds in furthering the
proposed Harbor Opening Celebration, including a Pageant.
i
It the consensus of opinion of the Directors that,
since the movement has already been launched with considerable
publicity, and if the City Council is -convinced that it is the
! desire of the community to celebratb the opening of the Port in
? the manner proposed, but not yet fully planned, the City would
i be justified in acting favorably on a contribution toward its
promotion, not to exceed $1,000.00, and contingent upon a like
i contribution being made by the County of San Mateo, and suffi-
cient further contributions being made to assure the financial
success of the event.
I`
N
