MINUTES OF REGULAR MEETING <br />RE OOD CITY COUNCIL <br />SEPTEMBER 17, 1934 <br />5:00 P. M. <br />Upon roll call, the following Councilmen were present: Mayor, C. G. Lambert, L. C. Christen— <br />sen, J. M. Eva,.E.-A. Fletcher, R. N. Jones, P. A. McCarthy, Geo. W. McNulty, City Clerk, <br />• 8: E. hopers. Absent: None. - <br />The minutes of the meeting of September 4, 1934, were approved on motion of Councilman Chris- <br />tensen, seconded by Councilman Fletcher. <br />In a letter from the State Highway Commission, Col. Skeggs asked the Council about its action <br />concerning the use of highway funds. As the City Manager was to see this gentleman on <br />Tuesday, it was decided to refer the letter to the Manager. <br />A letter was received from the Alco Crime Prevention Law Committee, signed by its sponsor, <br />Julian H. Alco, outlining the proposed initiative and furnishing supplementary literature <br />concerning it. On motion of Councilman Eva, seconded by Councilman Fletcher, the com- <br />munication was ordered filed. <br />The Independent Movers' and Warehousemen's Association of the East Bay Area, by its secretary, <br />G. E. Baugh, proposed to the Council that the license ordinance affecting the transfer <br />business be changed so that outside movers coming into Redwood City to pick up furniture <br />or other property be not required to pay the license fee, suggesting that a reciprocal <br />arrangement would-be made for any transfer people of Redwood City coming into Oakland. <br />The Clerk was instructed to write to Mr. Baugh that in accordance with the views of the <br />local transfer men, that the license would remain as it is, that movers from outside of <br />Redwood City could come in and deliver without payment, but when they came in to pick <br />up they would have to pay the license fee. <br />Ward Baughn, a High School student, asked permission of the Council to string a banner across <br />the highway below the Redwood City sign at Broadway. It was explained that the State <br />Highway Commission had jurisdiction, and as the City Manager was to be in San Francisco <br />on Tuesday, the matter was referred to him. <br />Al Bechet asked the Council if it could be arranged to floodlight the Sequoia High School <br />baseball field for the benefit of a 150 or 200 men who were playing soft ball games <br />under the Y.M.C.A. Group plan. Counci]man Eva thought it would be best to get some <br />definite figures as to the cost, maintenance, etc. It was stated that there would be <br />no objection on the part of the High School Trustees. After considerable discussion, <br />Councilman McCarthy moved that the matter be referred to the City Manager and City En- <br />gineer for study and report. Motion seconded by Councilman Fletcher and carried. <br />V. N. Lundy of a San Francisco Bond House spoke before the Council concerning some plan or <br />arrangement to refinance the 1915 bonds outstanding. He was told to work up some de- <br />finite project, including prices, with the help of the City Treasurer. <br />E. I. Brown, 1420 Main Street, together with his Attorney, David Cosgrave, appeared to petition <br />relief concerning certain construction as his store which had not been permitted by the <br />Building Inspector and had not been done according to his direction.
