190 <br />Christensen, seconded by Councilman Edmonds, and carried, it was order- <br />ed that Pellarin Court, Redwood City, San Mateo County, California, be, <br />and the same is hereby approved, that all streets, alleys, avenues, or <br />places shown upon said map and therein offered for dedication, be, and <br />the same are hereby accepted as public streets and such. <br />It was decided, on motion of Councilman Christensen, seconded by Councilman <br />Werder, to authorize the purchase of 1.98 acres from the Redwood City Harbor <br />Company for $2970, this item to be included in the 1940-41 budget. <br />The City Manager reported that the Southern Pacific Company was planning to <br />erect an iron fence on property opposite the station and suggested that I�I <br />flowers be planted there and taken care of by the City. 4 <br />Jj <br />It was suggested, on motion of Councilman Werder, seconded by Councilman <br />Christensen, that the Mayor declare the period from June 22 to July 4 <br />the "dress up period in Western style" for the benefit of the Fourth of <br />• i <br />July celebration. <br />There was read a letter from the Travelers Insurance Company, addressed to the <br />City Attorney, concerning the recent ruling that cities were not permitted <br />to contribute to group insurance policies for the benefit of employees. <br />It was suggested, and rates given, that the employees pay the full amount II <br />of premiums, until next spring, when, at the next legislature, it was f N <br />thought likely proper legislation could be put through making the con- <br />tribution to insurance premiums optional with the cities desiring to do <br />it. The City Manager was asked to take this matter up with the employees. <br />A letter and other printed matter from San Francisco Peninsula, Inc., was sub- <br />mitted. A request was made that the city contribute $1800 toward the en- <br />suing year's budget for advertising the peninsula. The matter was re- <br />ferred to the City Manager to take up in the consideration of the coming <br />budget. <br />A discussion ensued concerning the arbitrary action taken by the Musicians' <br />Union in forbidding the Redwood City Municipal Band to participate in the <br />the Fourth of July parade. It was thought inadvisable and exceedingly <br />unfortunate to have a municipal band that couldn't play for the citizens <br />in municipal affairs. It was finally decided, on motion of Councilman <br />Christensen, seconded by Councilman Edmonds, to send a letter to the <br />Central Labor Council indicating the dissatisfaction that the city feels <br />and asking that body what, if anything, they could do. <br />1 <br />11 <br />
