�l <br />loud speaker facilities at the coming July 4th celebration, was granted <br />on motion of Councilman Werder, seconded by Councilman Fletcher affi car- <br />vied. <br />In connection with proposed improvements of Jefferson Avenue between Broad- <br />way and Aiddlefie.ld Road and for the intersection of Vera Avenue and <br />Valota Road,, Gas Tax Projects No. 11 and 12, the following bids were <br />received: <br />1. F. Kaus, Stockton $ 6,,.71.20 <br />2. Peter Sorenson, Redwood City 51685.00 <br />3. 5,609.50 <br />4: Earl W. Heple, San Jose 6.752.41 <br />5. Marshall S. Hanrahan, Redwood City lb,514.15 <br />The City Manager in a letter addressed to the Council explained that <br />Bid No. 3 was contained in a sealed envelope with a printed letter- <br />head 11L. C. Smith, First and Railroad Avenues, San Mateo, California, <br />and a certified check-in the amount of V570.00 signed by Mrs. L. C. <br />Smith and certified by the National Bank of San Mateo, accompanied <br />the bido but the bid,was unsigned." After discussion and upon advice <br />by tho City Attorney that in his opinion an unsigned bid was not a <br />legal bid, Councilman Christensen, seconded by Councilman Fletcher, <br />offered a motion to award the contract to Peter Sorensen for the sum <br />of $5,685. Motion carried. Mr. L. C. Smith and his attorney argued <br />his bid was not signed through anr'oversight and that he was now willing <br />to sign it, therefore the Council should reconsider the award, but <br />! after the City Attorney restated his opinion as above, the Council <br />j declined to re -open the matter. <br />Councilman Fletcher reported that his committee was making progress on <br />the parking lot situation, but had no definite report to m*e at this <br />time. 1 <br />1 <br />In connection with the complaint of Dewey Brown about the premises of <br />135 Nueva Street, Fire Chief Ryan reported he and Building Inspector <br />Duncan inspected this building on April 22, 1941, at 9 A. M. and <br />found that an airtight heating stove had been installed, but it com- <br />plied with fire regulations. Building Inspector Duncan reported the flue <br />and sink did not comply with city ordinances and that steps were <br />being taken to have this condition corrected. Mr..Brown again stated <br />that so far as he was concerned all that was desired was to have the <br />City Council go on record as being opposed to having the house oc- <br />cupied by anyone other than the present tenants without improvements <br />
