Cal Bunyard, 768 Woodside Road, appeared before the Council in response to a request to show cause why action should not be taken for violation of City ordinances for conducting dances without permit. Mr. Bunyard explained that the Council had evidently been misinformed as he held no public dance on October 11, 1941, but later admitted that following the boxing exhibition several persons had danced in a room adjacent to the bar. -He further stated that the 15¢ charge was paid entirely to the orchestra, which statement was confirmed by a Mr. Uran of San Francisco; who played on this occasion. The matter was then discussed at some length by members of the Council and Mr. Bunyard, and finally upon the advice of City Attorney Mansfield that strict interpretation of the ordinance would indicate a technical violation, it was decided that no further dances should be held without first obtaining a permit. Mr. Bunyard then asked for permission to hold dances during the next two weeks. Council- man Fletcher, seconded by Councilman McNulty offered a motion denying a permit, which on roll call vote failed to carry. Councilman Werder, seconded by Councilman Christensen, then offered a motion that permit be granted which also failed to carry on roll call vote. After further discussion and on motion of Councilman Fletcher, seconded by Councilman McNulty, the Mayor was asked to appoint a committee to study and redraft the portion of the dancing ordinance relating to dances wheregno admission charge is made. Les Wolbert appeared in behalf of the Recreation Fund Committee and asked that the City cancel charges in the amount of $502.64 incurred during the Fourth of July Celebration: On motion of Councilman Werder, seconded by Councilman McNulty, it was agreed the above charges should be cancelled and transferred to the unbudgeted reserve. Councilman Werder made a report of the committee Is investigation of tr S'Slie and parking conditions along upper Broadway. He stated the merchants appeared to favor diagonal instead'of parallel parking, and if a loading tone was necessary in this block, it be located between the driveways to the Union 011 Co. service station. He further stated that one more parking space could be ottained if the driveway to the•Union 011 Co. station was made smaller and suggested the Oity Manager take this matter up with the Union 011 Co. The Committee also felt that services of the California State Auto- mobile Association should be engagedfor the purpose of conducting a traffic survey. C 0 0
