offering his collection to anyone else until the City had time for
decision.
Mr. Stephen Duffy, 230 Iris Street, again appeared before the Council ask-
ing that some restriction be ordered for keeping of pigeons. No
definite action was taken other than that the committee which had
been appointed to investigate this condition would try to make a
report at the next meeting.
The City Manager, representing the committee of himself, Councilman Anderson,
and the City Attorney, filed report and recommendation concerning the
opening of Cedar Street between Stambaugh and Hilton, the conclusion
of the committee being adverse to the opening of this street at this
time and recommending that the opening of Beech Street would be more
desirable. The report was ordered filed. Louis Dematteis filed a
petition of property owners requesting the opening up of Cedar Street.
He also addressed the Council on behalf of these signers. Notwith-
standing the report of the committee, it was decided to refer the
matter back to the same committee with the idea that perhaps a part
of the opening plan could be worked out without doing all of the work
just at this time.
Victor Canavese, representing the Woodside Gardeners Association and also
speaking for the Menlo Park Horticultural Society, asked the Council
to donate two trophies for their flower show originally scheduled for
October 27, but which might be postponed a week or two. On motion of
Councilman Fletcher, seconded by Councilman Anderson, it was decided
to appropriate not more than $25 for this purpose.
The committee for city bus line consisting of Councilman Anderson, chair-
man, Councilman McNulty, and City Manager filed the following report.
"The committee appointed by the Mayor to meet with a
like committee from the Chamber of Commerce to discuss the ad-
visability of establishing a bus system, owned and operated by
the municipality, after due consideration and after a joint
meeting with the Chamber of Commerce committee, recommend that
no action be taken at the present time for the following reasons:
1) The fact that a privately owned bus is now being effic-
iently operated, and an agreement has recently been
made by the City Council to contribute the sum of 050.00
monthly for the next six months in part payment for ser-
vices of the operator. This bus, after eighteen months'
operation, has not yet obtained sufficient revenue to
pay operating expense. As long as this service can be
continued at a nominal cost to the city, we recommend
its support and encouragement.
2) The lack of assurance that a successful service satis-
factory to the citizens can be provided without incurring
an operating deficit of such serious proportions as to
become a burden to the taxpayer.
i
1.
