■ <br />Mr. Frank DePatta addressed the Council. He thanked the people of Redwood City for <br />pressing tin cans and taking them to gasoline stations and ,'also the gasoline <br />stations for accepting them. 'He expressed his appreciation to the merchants <br />for donating trucks,, the city employees-, the press,,the-Boy Scouts, Sea Scouts, <br />elementary schools and parochial shhool for their efforts in.the paper drive and <br />also thetwo churches who answered the plea to bring dLscarded clothing for <br />the Allies. He stated that he would like to say through the Council•to.,the <br />people of Redwood .City not to slacken in their efforts. He said that the <br />problem now facing the salvage committee was the removal of paper stored in <br />differentCtlocations. He has from time to time asked different people to donate <br />trucks and does not feel they should be asked again, and asked if there wasn't <br />some way the City trucks could be used to collect paper and take it to San Jose. <br />He said he understood the trucks were not to, leave the city but wondered if <br />there wasn't some way it could be managed. <br />Mayor Granger stated that'the Government wanted the paper and had asked organi- <br />zations to collect it. The paper will go to waste if it is not delivered and ht <br />thought the City could make an exception and make the final delivery for Mr. <br />...DePatta. Councilman Britschgi asked if it- would.nIt be. much better to have Mr. <br />DePatta hire a truck and have the paper takbn away in fewer loads.. Mr. DePatta <br />answered that it Ras impossible to hire a truck. City Manager Mead -stated that. <br />-this was the first he had heard_of,the matter and that he believed the,City had <br />always cooperated with Mr. DePatta whenever possible. Councilman Fletcher, adkei <br />if the Army could not pick up the paper but Mayor Granger said -he believed the <br />.Army would not do that. Councilman Britschgi asked how many tons of paper <br />there were to be delivered. Mr. DePatta said thirty-four tons had already been <br />delivered and that thirty tons remained. Councilman McNulty suggested -that <br />cannery trucks going to San Francisco with produce could pick up paper on the <br />way back and deliver it to San Jose. Councilman Britschgi suggested that Mr. <br />DePatta contact City Manager Mead and see if -some concern would not pick up <br />the paper. Councilman Fletcher moved, seconded by Councilman Britschgi that tht <br />matter be put in the hands of the_ City Mangger and that Mr. DePatta contact him <br />„A. to work out a solution to the problem. Motion carried unanimously. <br />Oity Manager Mead reported on the matter of double parking on Broadway. He stated <br />that Chief Collins had instructed his men to enforce the ordinance and believed <br />it had improved.. He stated he would keep afPer the matter and would correct it. <br />Councilman McNulty asked why the emphasis should be placed on #roadway. In his <br />opinion, Main Street was just as bad. City Manager Mead stated that the condi- <br />tion Ras being corrected all over the City. <br />::n the matter of the abatement proceedings in regard to the Lombardino property on <br />Winslow Street next to the Ross Garage, City Attorney McCarthy explained that <br />been " <br />the complaint had/originally brought in by the Fire Chief who claimed it was <br />definitely a fire hazard. Building Inspector Duncan instructed City Attorney <br />McCarthy to start abatement proceedings which he did by preparing notice and <br />mailing it to record owner to lshow cause why the building should not be abated. <br />Mr. McCarthy explained that this had come up at the previous meeting and had <br />been continued over until this meeting to decide whether it woul&--be declared , <br />a nuisance. <br />C <br />
