Councilman Hilton brought out the fact that when Attorney Millington was addressing <br />Y <br />the Council earlier in the meeting he mentioned tYat several automobilet-con- <br />cerns have more than one used car lot and suggested that the City Marn.ger be <br />instructed to, check into the matter and find out if such cases are existing. <br />Mr. Miles spoke from the floor and said that several service stations in <br />. <br />town are handling used cars and asked if something could be done about it. <br />z <br />1 <br />Councilman Fletcher commented that there wa-s an ordinance against such a prac- <br />tice unless the station paid the regular fee. Councilman Anderson suggested <br />the City Manager Should check into this matter also. <br />Claims Nae 3539 to 3573 in the amount of $4796.11 were approved and ordered paid on <br />4 <br />motion of Councilman McNulty, ,seconded by Councilman Fletcher. <br />Councilman Britschgi brought up the fact that dome of the councilmen had been finding <br />fault and were critical of the fact that a few of the city employees were living <br />outside the city limits. He asked that the matter be brought out in the open. <br />and discussed thoroughly and suggested it be placed on the agenda. of the next <br />mee tin g. <br />1 <br />d <br />Mayor Granger stated he believed that this .time was gd good a time as any <br />to discuss the matter and asked for the opinions of the Council. <br />Councilman Anderson said if times were normal the situation would be dif- <br />ferent but *I.Vh the acute shortage of houses he did not think it was Pair to <br />make an issue of it. He -did not believe the Council could ask the employees <br />to pay inflation prices in order to find a place to live. <br />� <br />Councilman McNulty asked the Tribune reporter to gee that all remarks.were <br />put Into the newspaper so that the people of Redwood City would know where the <br />i <br />Council stood on the matter. He believed -city employees should live within the <br />limits of the city.. <br />Mayor Granger said the Charter provided that city employees should live <br />within the City,and that the only thing the Council could do was to live up -to <br />s <br />the Charter. He said he believed the fact that 'there were city employees living <br />outside the city would be an issue in April. <br />City Manager Mead expressed the%fact that he was very grateful that the <br />matter had been brought up. He explained there were five city employees, in - <br />eluding the city manager and the city clerk, living outside the city limits. <br />He felt that he had been operating "under a cloud" and that various comments <br />haft come back to him from time to time. he stated that he has been looking for <br />a home in Redwood City ever since he was appointed City Manager and that he <br />had looked at a house earlier in the day idUch was priced at $11,500. It was <br />14 or 15 years old and the real estate dealer had told him it was build for <br />09,000 and was not worth any more than that now. He stated that this was only :)n <br />one incident :•1•,1ie encountered in his search for a home. He believed that the , <br />one thing the people in the city looked to was efficient service .and believed <br />that was far and above the provision set up in the Charter regarding residence <br />in the city. He further stated there were to be some 6000 to $7000 homes <br />allowed to be built under the Title 6 program and that the final information on • <br />that would probably be released in two or three weeks. He stated he would pre - <br />Per to live within the city and asked the tolerance of the Council and the <br />people of Redwood City for himself and the other employees and said they unuld <br />continue to devote every effort to becoming citizens of Redwood City. <br />
