He believed it was <br />impossible to rent or,buy a house at a reasonable price, and thought the Counci: <br />had done its duty when it instructed the employees to find a home within the <br />city limits within a reasonable length of time. <br />Mr. Ferris Milbsaddressed the Council and suggested that the City Council <br />do everything possible to stop the talk about employees living outside the city, <br />He brought out the factnthat the manager of the Chamber'of Commerce in San <br />Francisco lived in Atherton and that Mr. Butler, Manager of the Chamber of <br />Commerce in Redwood City, had been extremely fortunate in being able to find a <br />home within his price .range. He said that at a time like this it was preposter <br />ous to have such criticism 'buzzing around". <br />Councilman Hilton stated he would like.to have a report on how maW pity <br />employees drove the City cars home at night. He mentioned that big organizatie <br />such as the P. G. & E., didn't allow the care to be driven home. City Manager <br />Mead said we were confined to the limits of the city which, in his opinion, did <br />make a difference. The employees are called out at any hour of the night to <br />maintain service and he would not like to see the privllege taken away. He <br />stated he did not believe any city employee was using a city car for pleasure. <br />He did not think with the gas shortage the City employees should be forced to <br />use their own cars to go to the Corporation Yard in the middle of tie night in <br />answer to calls regarding impaired service. <br />Mayor Granger - stated it wase important to satisfy the citizens of Redwood <br />�. <br />City that Mr. Mead had reported on the subject. <br />Councilman Britschgi said the Council in appointing Mr. Mead.had appointed <br />him with the understanding that he establish a residence in Redwo.od. City within <br />a reasonable length of time. -:He felt Mr. Mead had put forth .every effort to <br />do so and so far;, l t had been impossible for him to find a home.
