Communication was received from the Women of the Moose for permission to conduct
benefit dances at the Moose. Hall on Friday nights, March 10 and 17. Councilman
Britschgi moved, seconded by Councilman Fletcher, that permit be granted. Motio_1
carried Lmanimously.
City Clerk Dodge read communication from Mr. Louis B. Dematteis in which ne tendered
his resignation as a member of the War Council because of his induction into the
t-
armed services. Councilman rlbtcher moved, seconded by Councilman Armstrong,
that .the resignation of Mr. Dematteis be accepted and that a letter -be wrritten
to him expressing the regret of the Council.
Communication was received from the Planning Commission recommending that the permit
held.by the Redwood Diner be terminated at an early date. The diner is located
at 729 El Camino Real. Councilman Britschgi asked when the present license
expired. Mrs. Miramontes advised it expired on June 30. Couneil7rian Armstrong
asked the reason of the Planning Commission in wishing to have the permit ter
minated. City Attorney McCarthy explained that at the Planning Commission
meeting there had been a discussion in regard to the detrimental appearance to
the city of'the temporary buildings in town and that the Diner had been singled
out as being particularly objectionable. He believed it was the thought of the
Commission to have the tenant notified that they are operating under a temporary
permit and that the Council would not tolerate it indefinitely. He believed it
advisable to notify the tenant that they might expect such action in the near
future. Councilman Armstrong asked if any charge had been made that the Diner
did not meet sanitary requirements. Health Inspector Stein stated he had made
an inspection on February 8, 1944,,and that the restaurant almost met the
minimum requirements of the Health Department. Councilman Britschgi moved that
at the expiration of the present license no new license be issued at that
location arid that the tenant be'so notified immediately. Councilman Armstrong
did not believe the objection was to the location as much as to the structure.
Councilman Britschgi amended his motion so that no license be issued for business,
in'the present structure, seconded by Councilman Fletcher. Under the question,
Councilman Hiltofi did not believe it fair to expect the tenant to improve the
buildings with the present restrictions in force. Councilman Armstrong brought
out the fact that the permit was on a temporary basis and had been in force
for eight years. It was his opinion that the building was an eyesore. Mayor
Granger believed the owner should be cited to appear before the Council to show
'cause why the permit should not be*revoked. Councilman Britschgi, withdrew his
Motion and Councilman Fletcher withdrew his second. Councilman Britschgi moved
that the present occupant of the Diner be notified to appear before the Council
to show cause why his license should.riot be revoked, seconded by Coundilman
Fletcher. Motion passed unanimously.
City Clerk Dodge read communication from Pairs. William A. Baxter of the American Red
Cross asking that the City's donation to the Red Cross be trebled this year over
last year's donation. 'Last year''s donation was $200.00. Councilman Fletcher
a.
moved, seconded by Councilman McNulty, that the city contribute $400.00 toward
LL the Red Cross. Councilman Britschgi asked if there was this amount'set up iri
the budget. City Manager Mead stated that there was $600.00 set up in the budge,
0
Id
0
1
