Councilman Anderson asked if it would be possible. to have the wattage of the street signals at•Broachtay and B1 Camino Real increased due to the fact that it is hard to see them when the sun is shinning. 'City Manager Mead agreed to check into the matter. Councilman Britschgi suggested that a light hanging in the middle of the street would be more satisfatory as it is difficult to see the lights: Councilman Anderson asked the city Manager to contact the Southern Pacific Company and have a flagman placed at the corner of Bayshore Highway and Jefferson Avenue, as a serious hazard exists there at the present time. Councilman Fletcher brought up the fact that at the Broadway crossing the flagman sits in the house while trains discharge passengers and signal keeps ringing. He asked if it wouldn't"be possible to have the signal turned off while the trains are in the station. Councilman Fletcher reported that he had received several complaintd about dogs barking and running loose and asked to have a check made on it. He also re- ported that there had been complaints about the quality of hamburger being served at a restaurant and asked the health department to check. Councilman Armstrong asked City Manager Mead if he had established a residence in Redwood City. City Mager Mead replied that he had not as yet. He had con - tatted ten real estate agents in Redwood City who had been unable to find him a home which would accommodate his family. Councilman Armstrong then stated that the council had, on May 22nd, notified the city manager that if he had not complied with the terms of eligibility and established a residence in Redwood City by the first meeting in August the position would be declared vacant and, in view of the fact that the city manager had failed to complyr with the instructions, he wished to offer the following motion: Inasmuch as the city manager has failed to comply with the instructions of the council, the council does hereby declare the job vacant and the city treasurer be so notified. Councilman Granger seconded the motion and read a.statement which he had prepared in which he quoted section 26 of the Charter, which states that the city manager after appointment shall become a resident of the city within a reasonable length of time. He stated there had been criticism about the fact that the city manager had not as yet become a resident of the city and, in his opinion, the council had been reasonable. He cited the f act that the late Mr. Dimmitt, as city manager, had been paid a .salary of $5400 plus a $300 war bonus and Mr. Mead was being paid a salary of $6300 plus a $300 war bonus. He stated that the council had taken the necessary steps to declare the position of city manager vacant on August lst, and he again seconded the motion. Alfred Montan, Director of Recreation for the City of Redwood City, re- quested permission to address the council and was refused. Mr. John B. Nordstrand addressed the council and stated that he was a citizen of Redwood City who was interested in good government and stated that A he was greatly surprised at the action taken against the city manager and asked why the city manager was being "picked" on as there were other employees 0 I� i' '.Y
