5 Councilman Anderson stated that when the matter was brought up several months ago, R he had stood behind Mr. Mead because he knew of the very serious condition existing in Redwood City in regard to the housing problem. He stated that he had contacted Mr. Mead and he knew that he had made a determined effort to locate a house here. He also said that the publicity in the local newspapers last week advertised very widely the-afaat that Pair. Mead was in need of a home o and he asked him if anyone had contacted himssince that time. Mr. Mead re- plied that no one had offered him a house of any kind, let alone one that would accommodate his family. Councilman Anderson went on to say that the word l'promp�lyll is interpreted in the light of present conditions. What is prompt in one set of conditions is entirely different in another. He stated that he was satisfied that Mr. Mead had done everything possibjbe-to find a house and said that he was doing a wonderful job - nothing ever went wrong. He also brought out the fact that the Federal Government is overlooking the law in many cases and he stated that he -did not believe the council was overlooking the law but that it was a shallow interpretation of it if Mr. Mead were re- leased. Councilman Armstrong stated there had been several hooses sold and rented in Redwood City. Councilman Anderson abked-Councilman Armstrong if he con- sidered it good business for a man to pay twice the value of a house and asked if he would do sb. Councilman Armstrong replied that he would not and asked Councilman Anderson if he would be able to hold his position as Councilman if he moved from Redwood City, to which Councilman Anderson replied that that was an entirely different proposition inasmuch as a councilman has to be a resident of Redwood City and a qualified elector before he can run for office, whereas residence is not a qualification of the city manager. Councilman Armstrong and Councilman Granger stated they had taken an oath of office when they were elected to the council and that they were going to uphold those fi oaths. Councilman Anderson stated that he also took the oath of office and that the President of the United States and the Supreme Court also took.the same oath of office and that their interpretation of it is a great deal different at the present time than when they took it. City Manager Mead stated that before the council voted on the motion he would like to state that he has at all times made an endeavor to live in Red- wood City. He had made a determined effort to the last two months without success. He stated he has always wanted to move to town with his family and he wanted the people of Redwood City to know that he has definitely made an earnest effort to locate here. Councilman McNulty stated that in his opinion Mr. Plead was doing a good job as city manager and that he had taken an oath to live up to the Charter. He did not want to take his position away and stated he was not "picking on Mr. Mead". He asked City Attorney McCarthy if it was not a violation of the Charter for Mr. Mead to live outside of Redwood City. 0 IL it Cl C
