Councilman Britschgi commented on the police patrolman at Middlefield Road and
Broadway to protect children crossing at that point, suggesting also that, if
r
possible, a patrolman should be maintained at Cleveland and 'Jefferson Avenue.
Police Chief Collins stated that he would check into this matter during the noon
hour when the children are crossing at this point in large numbers. Mayor Granger
raised the question whether or not auxiliary police could be deputised to act in
this capacity. Councilman Anderson was of.the opinion that some of our City em-
' ♦ I Y
r ployees could be assigned to this type of work and paid overtime.., City Manager
Mead advised that wherever dangerous crossing existed school janitors should be
- deputised to protect children using such crossings.
Councilman Fletcher suggested that all police cars be furnished, as part of their
equipment, a broom and a dustpan to be used by policemen in cleaning up broken
glass, bottles, etc., in the interest of saving tires and rubber.
Mayor Granger requested information regarding recent request of Planning Commission to
Y -
btudy signs on walls of buildings with the, idea of preparing an ordinance to
control same. City Attorney McCarthy stated the Planning Commission had not as
yet submitted their recommendations.
Mayor Granger suggested that first-aid kits should be part of the equipment on all
police cars, stating that during these times of emergency first-aid kits should
be considered as matter of great importance. City Manager Mead was directed to
r.
check into this matter. Generell discussion followed on the matter of all police-
men and firemen qualifying for first-aid during their probationary period. On
_
motion of Councilman Anderson, seconded by Councilman Jenkins, City Attorney was
directed to prepare an amendment to the Personnel Rules to the effect that all
policemen and firemen must qualify by taking the Red Cross Firt-Aid 20 hour courw.%
new policemen and firemen to qualify within the probationary period. These em-
ployees must keep up to date at all times by taking refresher courses when
j necessary.
Mayor Granger commented on very poor showing being made in collection of scrap tin,
advising that something would have tobe done immediately to increase the amount
of ,tin cans collected from this district. Mayor Granger suggested the possilil.ity
of an ordinance compelling citizens to separate tin -cans from other refuse,
however, after general discussion it was decided this would not be a wise move at
this time.
)n motion of Councilman McNulty, seconded by Councilmgn Jenkins, claims Nos. 2425 to
&87, in amount $9,190.76 were ordered paid.
adjournment.
R.'B. Dodge, City Clerk
® B
