in regard to claimed fire damage to trees at 237 Topaz Street, which had <br />purportedly occurred during the last weed abatement program. City Manager <br />Blom advised that Mr. Lorenzon originally claimed that 'the city damaged <br />"O <br />*w4 ten of his trees and asked for $100 damages; Chief Ryan investigated the <br />N' matter and found that in addition to the fire which Mr. Lorenzon claimed <br />i <br />damaged the trees, another fire occurred a few weeks later and it was be- <br />lieved some of the damage was done at that time. Mr. Lorenzon was advised <br />that City Manager Blom and Fire Chief Ryan would recommend that $$25 dam- <br />ages be paid him for damage to five trees which the city may have damaged. <br />City Manager Blom recommended that a claim of $25 be approved. Council- <br />man Fletcher moved that the city manager's recommendation be accepted and <br />$25 damages allowed. Councilman Anderson asked if this matter should not <br />be referred to the insurance company. After some discussion in regard to <br />this, Councilman Anderson moved, seconded by Councilman Britschgi, that <br />the matter be referred to the city manager and that he have a statement <br />from the insurance company as to how the city ie covered in the matter. <br />Mw • <br />The motion passed unanimously. <br />City Manager Blom advised that in regard to the extension of the electric <br />system on Jefferson between Broadway and Marshall, plans had been made in <br />the past to install four single type electroliers on this block and that <br />bases have been laid for two. The total cost of this work, including that <br />I already done, would amount to $$1500. There are 600 feet of frontage on <br />l <br />s j this block which would mean an assessment of $2.50 per front foot against <br />i <br />the property owners. He asked the Council if it desired him to proceed with <br />the plans. the Council indicated that this should be done. <br />City Manager Blom reported that a petition had been received some time ago re- <br />questing that an alley between Vera and Madison Avenues running from <br />Cleveland to Fulton Streets be improved. He advised that this project could <br />be done at the same time improvements are made on Jefferson, Quartz and <br />Vera Avenues and asked if the Council wished it to be done. Councilman <br />40 Granger reaised the question that if this alley were improved it might be <br />turned into a street and houses built facing it. He did not believe this <br />should be allowed and that there should be some provision whereby houses <br />could be built on streets of a certain width. Councilman Britschgi moved, <br />seconded by Councilman Fletcher, that this matter be referred to the <br />Planning Commission for a recommendation. Motion passed unanimously. <br />City Manager Blom's report on meeting with the joint fact-finding committee of <br />the State Legislature was held over until a future date. <br />Communication was received from City Manager glom advising that the Board of <br />Review at a recent meeting took action to recommend to the City Council <br />that the rules and regulations of the Personnel System be amended to per- <br />mit the Council to grant extension of a leave of absence in excess of one <br />year when in its judgment such an extension of leave is justified and it <br />has been approved by the Board of Review. The Board further recommended <br />that if the Council is in favor of the above recommendation that W. H. <br />1 <br />255 <br />
