DGDGE
Clerk of the City of Redwood City
MINUTES OF SPECIAL MEETING
REDWOOD CITY COUNCIL
MAY 14, 1946
8:00 P.M.
On roll call, the following were present: Councilmen F. D.. Granger, G. W. McNulty
A. V. Swift, W. M. Werder, Mayor W. 19. Hilton, City Clerk R.. S. Dodge and
City Manager E. W. Blom. City Attorney P. A. McCarthy divided his time be-
tween Council Meeting and Planning Commission. Absent: Councilmen: C. 0.
Armstrong and C. A. Britschgi.
Mayor Hilton explained the purpose of the special meeting which was to consider
petition presented by the residents of the area from Kentfield, Woodside Road
Valota Road to Redwood Ave., objecting to the action of the Board of Super-
visors, County of San Mateo, to locate Juvenile Home in the vicinity. Several
residents of the area, led by Mr. E. P. Fletcher, appeared to speak against
the project.
City Attorney McCarthy gave tentative opinion to the effect that the County had
the right to condemn property within the City for County purposes. He also
called attention to the zoning ordinance which permitted the erection of
°municipal buildings" in a first residential area, under which category he
believed the Juvenile Horne would classify.
Councilmen Granger and McNulty were both of the opinion the petition should be
presented to the Planning Commission for their consideration and recommenda-
tion, as did Councilman Werder.
Councilman Granger moved, seconded by Councilman McNulty that the matter be re-
ferred to Planning Commission. Motion passed unanimously.
Request for permission to hold rummage sale May 15, 16 and 17th was granted to
Sisterhood Temple, Beth Jacob of Menlo Park on motion of Councilman Werder,
seconded by Councilman Sweft and unanimously carried.
City Manager Blom discussed the necessity of making certain alterations and re-
pairs in and around the City Hall, also expenditures approximating $400.00
improving lighting of Hawes Park and dirt fill, suggesting that these expen-
ditures be paid for out of the Post -War Fund. After discussion, Councilman
Granger moved, seconded by Councilman Werder, that the City Hall item be
paid from unbudgeted Reserve and the Hewes Park items from Post -War Funds.
Motion carried unanimously:
City Manager submitted for discussion map covering proposed changes in grade of
Valota Road at Vera Avenue. No action was taken at this meeting.
City Clerk Dodge read letter of resignation from Planning Commission and Traffic
Study Committee submitted by Mr. B. J. Nordstrand.
