HILTON
t Mayor of the City of Redwood City
v ; ATTEST:
RALPH S: DODGE
Clerk of the City of Redwood City
I hereby approve the foregoing Resolution
this 20th day of May, 1946.
W. W. HILTON
Mayor of the City of Redwood City
I Communication was received from the Peninsula Celebration Association in re-
i' gard to the Council's action at the last meeting to underwrite certain ex-
penses up to an amount of $2300 for the 4th of July Celebration. The
Association agreed to accept the Council's decision but asked for recon-
sideration of the matter of the cost of the fireworks. It was the Asso-
ciation's opinion that the Council should contribute $1000 for this pur-
pose and underwrite $1300. Councilman Werder stated he had given further
thought to the matter and inasmuch as he was the one who had made the
motion to underwrite the $2300, he moved that the Council reconsider the
i
underwriting with the thought in mind of the value the city will receive
from the celebration and also that by giving $1006 outright to the com-
mittee would not amount to more than a contribution to the Recreation Com-
mission. Councilman Swift seconded the motion. Under the question,
Councilman Britschgi believed that rather than give the $1000 to the com-
mittee the city attempt to purchase the fireworks, it being his opinion
that some money could be saved in this manner. Councilman Armstrong did
not see how the City Recreation Commission would profit from any profits
of the celebration inasmuch as they were going to provide a permanent
rodeo. None of the money would revert to the Recreation Commission.
Francis Britschgi, chairman of the Celebration Association, appeared ex -
i
pressing his opinion that inasmuch as the merchants were contributing to
the affair that the city should do its share. He expressed the opinion
that only civic governments could buy fireworks but suggested that.a defi-
nite sum be set aside for the celebration.
