Jordan, Superintendent.of the Southern <br />Pacific Railroad Company, requesting permission.to.._increase the speed of+ <br />trains through Redwood City from .45 miles.-.per .hour. to. 60. miles per hour, <br />In the interest of the war effor.t.. Councilman Granger asked the policy of <br />other cities. City Manager Mead advised that there had been a meeting held <br />with Mr. Jordan and two other representatives.of.the. railroad company and <br />Mayor Hilton and him. at. which.. time Mr.* _Jordan. a.dvis.ed .that' all other Penin- <br />sula cities had permitted .the 60 mile spsed,.limi.t.... It,, was the general <br />concensus of the council,_ however, .tha.t the. trains traveled.at an excessive <br />speed now and it would be unwise to ralse.the speed.limit. Councilman <br />Armstrong, moved, seconded. by Councilman Brit s.chgi,...tha.t .the request of the <br />Southern Pacific for an alteration.of.the.speed..limit.be denied. Motion <br />passed unanimously: <br />Communication was received from the Redwood City -Traffic Study Committee re- <br />commending that (1) a stop sign.be placed.at the corner of Spring and <br />Maple stopping traffic going.into Broadway;.(2). that a.strip be painted <br />on Maple Street at Broadway to guide.eas_tbpund traffic! on Broadway into <br />Maple; (3) that a stripe be painted .on'Spr.ing-Street at 'Broadway to guide <br />eastbound traffic on Spring into Broadway. Councilman.Britschgi moved, <br />seconded by Councilman Anderson,.tbat the recommendations of the Traffic <br />Study Committee be concurred.,in.....Motion passed unanimously. <br />Application for dance permit from Yvonne Schlichtmann was received far per- <br />mission to conduct danceslvednesdays, July 18th,,.25th and August lst, <br />until 12s00 midnight, fee having been.paid... Councilman Britschgi moved, <br />seconded by Councilman Ander.son,.that permit.be.granted. Under the <br />question, Councilman Armstrong asked .if ..the ;bermit..included the sale of j <br />beer. Mayor Hilton expressed the opinion.that.the permit would be <br />granted under the same basis as the permit.was.granted at the last <br />meeting which included the sale, of beer. Motion -passed with Councilman I <br />Armstrong voting in the negative. <br />Application for dance permit was received from_Court.Madrone.No. 158, F. of A. <br />for permission to conduct.benefit.dances. .July 21st,.28.th and August 14th <br />until 12s00 midnight. Councilman McNulty moved, seconded by Councilman-- <br />Britschgi, that permit be granted. Motion passed. with Councilman Arm- �I <br />strong voting the the negative. <br />I <br />Application for restaurant license was received from Lavinia. Grevonis to con- <br />duct restaurant at 135 Willow Street. No restaurant is now being con- <br />duoted by the applicant and no liquor license is being.applied for. The <br />license fee will be. paid when. the. permit, is. granted. No health inspec- <br />tion has been made as yet.. Councilman Armstrong was.of. the opinion that <br />I <br />inasmuch as the license fee had not been paid and no health inspection <br />made, the application should go through the regular channels before being <br />r" <br />0 <br />
