152
Highways was desirous of keeping any places of amusement or business off the high-
ways for a distance of 1000 feet in order to lessen traffic hazards. Councilman
Werder moved, seconded by Councilman Britschgi, that the communication be referred
to the Planning Commission.. Motion passed unanimously.
Communication was received from the City Treasurer requesting permission to transfer
cash from some fund to the Water Department to offset the amount of U. S. Govern-
ment securities which the Water Department now holds in the amount of $20,000 Series
C Bonds, which cost $179500; $20,000 Series D bonds, which cost $16,900; and
$21,000 Series G bonds, which cost $21,000; or a total of $61,000 maturity value,
which cost $55,500. Councilman Armstrong asked.the length of time the bonds had
to be held to realize the full maturity value. City Treasurer Dodge advised that
they had to be held about five more years; the Series G. bonds are not redeemable
until maturity. There was some discussion in regard to the advisability of such
an investment having been made. Councilman Armstrong asked for a report as to how
many of the bonds could be sold or redeemed at the present time. City Treasurer
Dodge was to check into this matter. It was suggested that the money be trans-
ferred from the 1944 Bond Fund temporarily. Councilman Werder moved, seconded by
Councilman Britschgi, that the recommendation of the City Treasurer be accepted.
Motion passed unanimously.
Councilman Britschgi inquired when the 90 main was to be installed in the Edgewood Park
District. City Manager Blom advised that 1011 pipe was to be installed there and
that it had just been received, however, he did not believe this would be a good
time to install it inasmuch as the installation cost was so high and that if it
was delayed for a while a better contract might be obtained. He believed that the
S^ pipe installed on the Alameda and the 6° pipe installed from Whipple to
Arlington on Oakdale should help strengthen the pressure in the Edgewood Park area.
He stated it would be necessary to install a feeder line from Alameda to El Camino
Real to get the full results of both mains. It was decided that the City Manager
should advertise for bids at this time and 'see if a reasonable contract could be
obtained.
Communication from the Planning Commission was received recommending favorable action
on the tentative map of the Redwood Industrial Tract subject to certain conditions.
Inasmuch as the tentative_ map was not submitted with the communication no action
was, taken at this time.
Bids for the paving of California Square were opened and the following received:
1,
LJ
Total Bid "
M. Weber $11,160.62
Peter Sorensen 5,344.95
Frank W. Smith 10,244.75
Gabriel Construction Company 11,512.65
T. M. Blomquist 11,531.65
The necessary bidders' bonds and certified checks were presented with each bid
and the bids turned over to the Engineering Department for checking. . I
L
D. S. Fabbro, 520 Arguello Street, appeared and requested permission to convert building
into apartments at the above address. A permit had been issued in 1940 to move
the building to its present location and another permit issued to do certain
alterations which had been completed. It was the contention of Mr.'Fabbro, how-
ever, that he had had a permit to convert the building into apartments but that
the work had not been completed. Since that time, the zoning of the property has i
