224 <br />COMMUNICATION,WAS RECEIVED FROM THE TWELFTH NAVAL DISTRICT,"OFFICE OF THE COMMANDANT, <br />requesting a site on which they can erect a quonset but for the purpose of giving <br />instructions in electronics. It was the opinion of the Council that this matter <br />should be turned over to the Port Commission and Councilman Werder moved, seconded <br />by Councilman Granger, that the Twelfth Naval District be advised that the matter <br />has been turned over to the proper authorities who will communicate with them. <br />Motion passed unanimously. iF, <br />ATTORNEY PAUL A. McCARTHY appeared before the Council on behalf of his client, Herbert A. <br />Close, requesting permission for an exclusive franchise to erect concrete benches <br />at various.bus stops throughout the city for the purpose of placing advertising matter <br />r r <br />on the benches. The benches would be solid concrete with reinforced steel. It was <br />estimated that there would be from 50 to 100 benches which would be installed in <br />places to be designated by the City Manager. He offered to pay $1.00 per month <br />per bench. Similar benches are being erected in various peninsula cities. Mr. <br />Close would furnish a bond to the city to indemnify it against any liability. <br />Councilman Britschgi moved, seconded by Councilman Werder, that the matter be turned <br />over to the City Manager for a report at the next meeting. Motion passed unanimously. <br />MR. HARRY JAMIESON appeared before the Council requesting that action be taken to repair <br />Chestnut Street. City Manager Blom reported that some work had been done on this <br />street but that it had not been too successful. The subsoil is very soft and heavy <br />trucks tear the pavement out. It was his opinion that the block in question should <br />be repaved. Councilman Granger suggested that the cement companies whose trucks <br />use the street. There was some discussion as to what funds could be used to repair rI+ <br />the street. Councilman Werder moved, seconded by Councilman Britschgi, that the <br />matter be referred to the City Manager as to ways and means of fixing Chestnut <br />Street and that the cement companies be contacted for donation of material., <br />Motion passed unanimously. <br />Mayor Hilton questioned city employees being used to work on California Square <br />parking lot. It was his opinion that the contractor was to do all the work. City, <br />Manager Blom advised that it had been the intent to use city forces to take care <br />of resurfacing the pavement adjacent to the new curb inasmuch as it is a very <br />indefinite item to place in a contract. <br />IN REGARD TO MINIMUM RATES TO BE CHARGED BY TAXICABS, City Clerk Dodge advised that he <br />had written the cab companies asking them to' reach a decision as to the rate they <br />believed should be charged but that the Yellow and Sequoia Cab Company had not <br />1-4 <br />advised their recommendation. Councilman Britschgi moved, seconded by Councilman <br />Swift, that the taxicab companies be ordered to show cause why the taxicab rate <br />now in effect should not be changed. Motion passed unanimously. <br />CITY CLERK DODGE READ OPINION OF BUILDING INSPECTOR DUNCAN IN REGARD to erection of <br />temporary buildings in Fire Zone 1, which stated that in his opinion the ordinance'�I <br />does not allow a temporary wooden structure in Fire Zone 1 for advertising purposes. -y <br />Mr. Charles Parks, who had made application at the last meeting for a permit to <br />erecta prefabricated cabinette in the Fire Zone 19 appeared and again requested <br />that he be permitted to erect the building. Plans of the building were presented <br />and studied by the Council. Fire Chief Lodi was asked for his recommendation and <br />he stated that a frame building was not allowed -in Fire Zone 1 under the ordinance. <br />i <br />
