234
In this ''vicinity in a satisfactory manner, Councilman Britschgi moved, seconded by
Councilman Granger, that the permit be granted subject to the approval of the
Building Inspector, Fire Department and Health Department. Under the question, City
Manager Blom pointed out that there may be some difficulty in furnishing water to
this location inasmuch as there is only a 211 line in this vicinity and the motel
will be at the end of the line. It was also brought out that this was an industrial
area which might present objectionable features to the operation of the motel. This
matter was understood by the applicant. Motion passed unanimously.
MR. HARRY ROBINSON appeared before the Council requesting action be taken by the city to
acquire the parking lot directly across the street from the Southern Pacific
freight station. It was his contention and that of several other merchants that
this location would be more suitable than the site on which the city had started
condemnation proceedings some time ago. The merchants have a sum of money collected
for rent for this lot and Mr. Robinson offered it to the city toward purchase of the
lbt. Former City Attorney McCarthy was in the audience and explained that con-
demnation proceedings had been instituted against the lot next to the ice company.
The merchants were-to.circulate a petition in regard to the formation of an
assessment district but had not done so and the matter had been dropped at that
point. Under the State Act, initiation of such proceedings must be done by the
Interested property owners. It was suggested by Councilman Britschgi that a com-
mittee be appointed to study this matter and to meet with the merchants. Council-
man Granger poved, seconded by Councilman McNulty, that the Mayor be authorized to
appoint a committee of the Council including the City Manager and City Attorney and
at least two merchants from the lower Broadway district, and a recommendation be
returned at the next meeting. Motion passed unanimously.
Mayor Hilton appointed Councilman Britvchgi, Holmquist and Granger of the Council,
the City Manager, City Attorney and Mr. Robinson of the merchants with the sug
gestion that he name one other merchant.
COUNCILMAN GRANGER asked if any decision had been reached by the Traffic Safety Commission
in regard to stop signals on Middlefield Road from Broadway to Bayshore Highway.
Street Superintendent Pontow advised that none had been at the meetings he attended.
The matter was carried on the agenda and it was directed that a communication be
addressed to the Traffic Safety Commission for a report from them on this matters
COUNCILMAN GRANGER asked if any decision had been reached in regard to traffic signal
correction at Broadway and Brewster and the E1 Camino Real. City Manager Blom
advised that the matter is just about ready to submit to the State Highway Department.
IN REGARD TO THE PROPOSED SALE OF THE STREET LIGHTING SYSTEM, City Manager Blom advised
that in accordance with instructions of the Council at the last meeting he had
addressed a letter to the Pacific Gas and Electric Company telling them for the
purchase of the street lighting system with the understanding that there would be
no obligation by doing so. A reply had been received from them quoting a price
of $59,405 for the aerial system with a few exceptions. The price was arrived at
by figuring the reproduction cost of the system at $103,440, and deducting depreciation.
The city had We a check of these figures, using its own cost of materials .and
labor, and arrived at a figure within ten percent of the P. G. & E. figure, or
$114,550. The difference in the cost is due to the fact that the P. G. & E. would
be able to purchase the material on a much larger scale at less cost to them.
hi
L
