. F.
244
ASSISTANT ENGINEER PONTOW PRESENTED ESTIMATE of - repairing Bradford Street Bridge which had
been prepared by City Engineer Longeon. The cost of installing two 7211•and one 481,
corrugated iron culvert pipes was estimated at $7,121.00. City -Manager Blom advised
that when the new Freeway is constructed this bridge will probably have to be removed
entirely. He believed that it would be cheaper to install the culverts rather than
building a temporary timber bridge inasmuch as the culverts could be salvaged and
used elsewhere. As to when the Freeway will be completed in this area, he estimated
that it would be three or four years. The bridge is now closed to traffic and there
was some discussion as to whether it could not remain closed until the Freeway is
completed. City Manager Blom suggested that Colonel Skeggs of the Highway Depart-
ment be contacted to ascertain their plans for this area. Councilman Werder moved,
seconded by Councilman Britschgi, that the matter be placed on the agenda and the
City Manager contact Colonel Skeggs as to the State Highway Department's plans for
the Freeway in this section. Motion passed unanimously.
City Manager Blom also suggested that the whole problem of the creek might be
studied. It was recommended that the City Manager report further on the relocation
of the creek.
CITY ATTORNEY CURRIE PRESENTED FOUR COPIES OF ZONING ORDINANCES in effect in cities of
approximately the same size as Redwood City. He explained that there was considerable
expense,in bringing the land use map up to date. A layout of a tentative plan neces-
sitates -going out.into the .field and checking boundaries. After this is done, there
are several public hearings on the matter before final adoption by the Council.
Mayor Hilton was of the opinion that bids should be taken to ascertain if a cheaper
price could be obtained. City Attorney Currie stated that the cheapest of the four.
ordinances which he had presented had cost $1500. The price of $900 was quoted
because the maps are pretty well up to date at the present. Councilman Werder was
of the opinion that this was an opportunity of getting a new zoning ordinance at a
reasonable figure and he believed it should be accepted. Councilman McNulty moved,
seconded by Councilman Werder, that the firm of Hahn and Campbell be engaged to
prepare a new zoning ordinance at a cost of $900. Under the question, Councilman
Britschgi asked if it would be necessary to accept the ordinance as presented by
Hahn and Campbell. `
It was explained that the adoption of the ordinance was definitely up to the Council.
Mayor Hilton believed the money would be wasted on a new ordinance as the zoning
ordinance is constantly being violated. Councilman Britschgi asked for the City _
ri
Manager's opinion. City Manager Blom doubted that it would be possible to get the
work done for less than $900 even if the city forces were free to do the work. A
roll call vote was requested and the following vote recorded: Ayes and in favor
of the motion: Councilman Britschgi, Granger, Holmquist, McNulty, Swift and
Werder. Noes and against the motion: Mayor Hilton.
'CITY MANAGER BLOM REPORTED THAT HE HAD BEEN AUTHORIZED to negotiate with the California
Water Service Company for the purchase of 1700 feet of water main on Spring Street
beyond 5th Avenue. He advised that he and the City Attorney had had several con-
ferences with the California Water Service Company and the M. J. King Company,
subdividers in the area, and it was proposed that in lieu of an outright sale of
the main that a lease agreement be entered into which will permit the use of the
i
