On motion of Councilman Werder, seconded by <br />Councilman Britschgi, letter was referred to Planning Commission for consideration <br />and recommendation. Motion carried. <br />NINETY DAY EXTENSION GRANTED TO REDWOOD CAB COMPANY on their fifth permit to enable them <br />to get delivery on a new car from West Bay Motors on motion of Councilman Granger, <br />seconded by Councilman Swift, and carried. <br />COMMUNICATION RECEIVED FROM TRAFFIC AND SAFETY COMMISSION recommending against erection of <br />stop signs on Middlefield ,Road from Bayshore to Broadway as suggested by the Council J <br />sometime ago. They call attention to the fact that Bradford Street Bridge is now <br />closed, and traffic is light over all other streets in this area. Police Department <br />and Engineering Department concurs in this opinion. Councilman Werder moved approval <br />of the recommendation, seconded by Councilman Holmquist, and carried unanimously. <br />COMMUNICATION RECEIVED FROM DAVE N. SCHUTZ representing Fraternal Order of EaIles and <br />Junior Chamber of Commerce requesting some action on the part of the City Council <br />to correct Redwood Creek condition. Letter also congratulates Council on their <br />action making available land in Redwood City for the expansion of County buildings. <br />Councilman Werder moved, seconded by Councilman McNulty, that City Manager answer <br />communication explaining the problem and what action is contemplated. Motion <br />carried unanimously. <br />COMMUNICATION RECEIVED FROM CITY ENGINEER CECIL LONGSON recommending granting of a ninety <br />day extension on L. C. Smith contract covering'conetruction of improvements in <br />Redwood Terrace No. 1, explaining that a part of the delay was due to non -receipt <br />of water pipe and the resultant delay in laying of mains because of water front <br />strike in San Francisco. -Recommendation further includes stipulation that extension ; <br />be granted without penalty. Councilman Granger moved approval, seconded by Council- <br />man Holmquist and carried unanimously. <br />CITY ENGINEER CECIL LONGSON RECOMMENDS EXTENSION OF NINETY DAYS on Peter Sorenson's <br />Redwood Villa Park, Res. 1946-3 contract covering paving, sidewalks curb and gutters <br />under construction in that area. Councilman Werder moved, seconded by Councilman <br />Swift that extension be granted. Councilman Granger asked whether assessment <br />district had been set up to which City Manager Blom advised assessment would be <br />worked up on completion of the job at which time property owners would be given.the <br />opportunity to pay cash before going to bond. In the meantime, Engineering Depart- <br />ment is prepared to furnish estimate of cost upon request. Motion carried unanimously. <br />L. C. JENSEN CONTRACT LAYING WATER MAINS in Redwood Villa Park, Murray Tract and Edgewood <br />Road has been completed and officially accepted and final payment approved as recom- <br />mended•by City Engineer Longson, on motion of Councilman Britschgi, seconded by i <br />Councilman Werder, and carried. ` <br />COMMUNICATION RECEIVED FROM CITY MANAGER BLOM recommending repeal of rule prohibiting the <br />hiring of married women which is placing a severe handicap on efforts to'fill <br />vacancies in clerical and stenographic staff. Mr. Blom cited several experiences <br />during the past four months where examinations were of necessity cancelled due to <br />insufficient number of applicants for positions of Typist Clerks and Secretary. <br />i <br />Councilman Werder, after commenting on his own experience in receiving several appli- <br />cations for a position in his office all being married women, moved approval of <br />City Managerls recommendation, seconded by Councilman Swift.
