on motion of Councilman Holmquist, seconded by Councilman Britschgi and carried. 225 <br />VARIANCE TO A. R. BURT for Lot 1, Block -17., corner Broadway & Hopkins. The lot at present <br />is split by a Zoning Boundary, one portion in R-1 and one in R-4. The Planning Com- <br />mission recommended granting variance as provided in Section 20 of Ordinance 600 with <br />the provision that a permit to build be granted only after the Commission approves the <br />plans and elevations of the proposed use. Recommendation approved on motion of Coun- <br />oilman Swift, seconded by Councilman Holmquist. Motion carried. <br />B. RUGGIERO REQUEST FOR VARIANCE on a portion of Lot 1, Block 16, Oak Knoll Manor, corner <br />Circle Road and Hopkins to allow subdivision into two lots each of which will be <br />under the 6000 square feet standard by 46 and 34 square feet respectively. The Com- <br />mission recommended approval which was granted on motion of Councilman Britschgi, <br />seconded by Councilman Holmquist. Motion carried. <br />PACIFIC COAST BUILDING OFFICIALS CONFERENCE at Seattle September 20 to 23rd to which <br />the Building Inspector was requested to attend. Communication was ordered filed, <br />on motion of Councilman Granger, seconded by Councilman Holmquist and carried. - <br />M. P. TRAVERS appeared before the Council regarding request for funds to complete Hoover <br />Recreation building. Mayor Werder explained the matter had been referred to the <br />Council Budget Study meeting. <br />C. B. HABERLIN REQUEST FOR WATER SERVICE, JEFFERSON AND CANADA ROAD. Both City Engineer <br />Jain and Water Superintendent Winter recommended that service be denied on the <br />grounds that there is at present insufficient water for the Emerald Lake system, and <br />that many requests for service had of necessity been denied. By granting this <br />j request, a bad precedent would be established. After considerable discussion and <br />!� the Council's expression that they would be pleased -to assist Mr. Haberlin, Council- <br />man Granger <br />ouncil- <br />manGranger upheld the recommendation and moved denial of service. Motion, seconded <br />by Councilman Holmquist and carried unanimously. <br />REMOVAL OF POLES BY PACIFIC TELEPHONE AND TELEGRAPH COMPANY on Jefferson Avenue betvreen <br />Broadway and Middlefield Road was promised verbally by Mr. N. H. English, District <br />Plant Engineer sometime in July. The matter was placed on the agenda for the first <br />meeting in August. <br />ABATEMENT, BEEGER AND ARCHIBALD PROPERTIES, duly and regularly continued on motion of <br />Councilman Granger, seconded by Councilman Britschgi until the first meeting in <br />August. Motion carried. <br />TWENTY FOOT ALLEY - LENOLT TRACT was referred back to the Planning Commission for further <br />study at the request of City Engineer Jain. Placed on agenda. <br />CHARTER STUDY COMMITTEE. Councilman Britschgi offered the name of Mr. Wm. McKeegan and <br />Councilman Holmquist offered the name of Milton J. Priger, 1516 Brewster Avenue. <br />This completes the Citizens Committee. <br />BOUNDARIES - BROADWAY No. 3. Council approval held up to allow further study. <br />PHYSICAL EXAMINATIONS - NEW EMPLOYEES, Councilman Granger explained his purpose was to <br />have the matter referred to the Personnel Board for study and recommendation. He <br />explained further that his thought in the matter was to protect the employee as <br />well as the City in the hiring of new employees, at no time did he advocate exam- <br />inations for the present employees. Mayor Werder stated his objection to the idea <br />on the grounds that a $5.00 physical examination would not disclose any particular <br />disability of a prospective employee. After further discussion, Councilman Granger <br />moved, seconded by Councilman Holmquist, that the matter be referred to the Personnel <br />
