Councilman Holmquist reported progress, but that a <br />full and complete report was not ready. <br />PROPOSED RATE INCREASE, SOUTHERN PACIFIC COMPANY. Before Councilman Morgan made his report he suggesteed <br />that people who represented the Southern Pacific and were present be allowed to appear and speak <br />on the subject. Mr. Ernest Poole, Chairman of the Research Bureau, and Mr. Joseph Vonau, 'Jr., <br />Assistant to Vice President of Traffic were introduced by Mr. Louis Chess, Attorney. Both stated <br />the need for added revenue and gradual increase in cost of maintenance. Mayor Werder expressed hope <br />that deficit could be made up on freight or some other way and appreciated the fact that the Inter- <br />state Commerce Commission would not permit them to operate at a loss. Mr.Chess thanked the Council <br />for the opportunity of having appeared to state their side of the issue. Councilman Morgan then <br />asked the City Attorney to read the resolution which had been prepared by the committee for adop- <br />tion, in which they felt a raise in rates was not in the best interests of the community and other <br />Peninsula communities, a certified copy of the resolution to be filed with the Public Utilities <br />Commission of California opposing the rates. On behalf of the merchants, real estate operators <br />and the community Councilman Morgan offered the resolution and moved adoption, seconded by Council- <br />ma;6wift and carried on roll call., <br />RES 0LUTI ON N0. 787 <br />RESOLUTION OPPOSING EFFORTS OF SOUTHERN PACIFIC COMPANY TO INCREASE RATES, <br />UPON ITS PENINSULA LINES <br />WHEREAS it has come to the attention of the City Council of thg6ity of Redwood City, State of <br />California, that the Southern Pacific Company desires to and intends to attempt to obtain author- <br />ization to increase the fares now being charged by it for commuter service upon the San Francisco. <br />Peninsula; and <br />MWHEREAS many residents' of the City of Redwood City regularly ride upon trains operated by <br />the Southern Pacific Company between points upon the San Francisco Peninsula; and <br />WHEREAS it would work a great hardship upon such residents to be forced to pay additional <br />sums for such transportation; and <br />WHEREAS it is the opinion of the City Council of the CitY of Redwood -City that the Southern <br />Pacific Company is not justified in seeking to increase such rates; and <br />WHEREAS it would be for the best interests of the City of Redwood City and its inhabitants <br />thereof, and to the best interests of the other cities, communities and residents of the San <br />Francisco Peninsula that such rates for transportation do not be increased; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Redwood City, State of <br />California, that the said City Council go on record as being opposed to any increase of rates <br />by the Southern Pacific Company for transportation furnished to citizens of the City of Redwood City <br />or citizens of other portions of the San Francisco Peninsula; and <br />That the Clerk of the City of Redwood City, State of California, be directed to file a certi- <br />fied copy of this resolution with the Public Utilities Commission of the State of California, un- <br />less said Clerk be advised by the City Attorney of the City of Redwood City, State ofCalifornia,. <br />that it would not be proper for such certified copy to be so filed; and <br />BE IT"FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Redwood City,State of Californiap <br />hereby adopts as its,policy the furtherance of the efforts of any organized group within said City <br />or upon the San Francisco Peninsula in opposition to such efforts of thghouthern Pacific Company. <br />Passed and adopted by the Council of the City of Redwood City at a regular meeting thereof, <br />held on the 3rd day of October, 1949, by the following vote; <br />AYES, and in favor of the passage and adoption of the foregoing resolution, Councilmen: <br />BRITSCHGI, GRANGER, HOLMQUIST, MORGAN, SPILLERS, SWIFT and NEWER. <br />NOES, Councilmen:..
