I
established in this location and that it would be a detriment to the neighborhood, 375
had a depressing effect on most people. Councilman Morgan moved that application be
denied, that after a great deal of planning, time and money expended by the City for
the Master Plan he thought this would be poor planning, as mortuaries were classed in
a C-1 District. Motion was lost for the want of a second. The following appeared:
Mrs. Gearey and Mr. Tracy were opposed. Mrs. Crippen was in favor 65 the mortuary.
The letter was read by the City Clerk from Mrs. D. Muller opposing Mortuary. Other pro-
tests were received from Mrs. Otto Shurtz, 1402 Jefferson Avenue, -Eagle Highlands
Neighbors, 642 E1 Camino Real, signed by D. A. Farrell, Mrs. Emma Meyerhoffer, owner
of 1457-59-61 Jefferson Avenue, Mr. A. R. Green, 415 Harrison Avenue, and Mrs. Harry
4
Hallett, owner of 247-9, 251-3-7-9, and 261 Harrison Avenue. Councilman Britschgi
s moved that permit be granted, seconded by Councilman Holmquist. Mr. Meyerhoff wished
to know if any Council member had a financial interest in the mortuary, if he would.
j' have a right to vote. City Attorney Currie stated he would have to look into that
4
question. Mrs. Feldbasch, 1429 Jefferson, who lived across from the church and had
two homes on the lot, was in favor of the mortuary. On roll call vote there was a tie,
€ Councilmen Morgan, Swift and Warder voting No. Councilman Spillers noted absent.
o
3 Councilman Morgan moved this be carried over to the next meeting for the vote when all
members of the Council would be present, seconded by Councilman Swift, Motion carried.
i
VJm. MICHEL, APPEARED IN REGARD TO ABATEMENT OF 1416 Main Street. Mr. Michel thought all the
work had been done as required by the Building Inspector, but it appeared there were
two more ties needed which he was willing to have installed so that building would not
j
have to be torn down after he had spent $200 on repairs. He was willing to have
building demolished after expiration of lease. If the required ties were installed
the building could be used for certain occupancy according to the Building Inspector.
Councilman Swift moved that Mr. Michel be allowed to complete the repairs required and
offered resolution rescinding Resolution 814 which was to abate the building, resolu-
tion to include approval of Building Inspector and subject to receipt of letter from
i Mr. Michel agreeing to tear down the building at termination of lease, approximately
one and one-half years from this date. Motion seconded by Councilman Holmquist and
carried on roll call, Councilman Morgan voting No and Councilman Spillers rioted absent.
January 13, 1950.
y: Council of Redwood City
j City Hall
Redwood City, California
Dear Sirs:
Re: RESOLUTION NO., 815.
We acknowledge receipt of a copy of your Resolution No. 815 rescinding
former Resolution No. 814 declaring the building on our property in Redwood
City a public nuisance and ordering it torn down.
a We note that Resolution. No. 815 is conditioned upon our agreeing in
writing that we will raze the building at the expiration of the present
1 lease on the property on November 1, 1950 and that if the building is not
torn down the City may do so without further notice to us and making the
cost a lien on the property. We so agree.
In view of this agreement and the further fact that all repairs ordered
by the Council including the installation of steel "tie ins" have been com-
pleted, we ask that any notices of abatement now posted on the property be -
immediately removed and that any action which may be necessary be taken to
give full effect to Resolution No. 815 terminating the abatement proceedings.
Very truly yours,
WILLIAM F. MICHEL
LORAINE MICHEL
VICTOR A. MICHEL
