20 <br />School improvements was injected at this point asbeing pertinent to the above <br />discussion. <br />VERA AVENUE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENTS. The City was in receipt of a Resolution from the School <br />District setting forth their willingness to make the following improvements -on <br />Vera Avenue adjacent to the Vera -Avenue School site: <br />(a) Pave a 17 foot strip, with 2" x 8" redwood header boards. <br />(b) Put in curb, gutter and sidewalks at setback line <br />(c) Install catch basin in 40" drain. <br />(d) Deed a 25t strip to conform with existing setback of Vera Avenue. <br />Performance by the School District to be conditioned upon the City of Redwood City <br />making the following improvements, at no cost to tfie school district: <br />(a) Relocate or lower main water line. <br />(b) Dedicate 151 waterline property as a street. <br />I <br />(a) Pave an adjacent 171 strip to make normal street width under assessment <br />, A <br />district procedure. <br />(d) Widen Vera Avenue at such time as traffic may warrant. <br />Mr. Eekles, reporting for the property owners in the Kensington Square area who had <br />taken vote on the division of the improvement project, stated that they were in <br />favor of this division in order to expedite matters, if assurance could be given that <br />eventually all streets concerned would be Improved. Councilman Royer moved that the <br />City Council go on record to assure the people in this area that all streets which <br />would have been improved had the project remained as a whole unit, would be improved <br />under the plan of division Into smaller units, as soon as the necessary steps could <br />be taken. Seconded by Councilman Herkner and carried. Councilman Royer then moved <br />that the City Engineer be authorized to split the project up into necessary division, <br />and proceed as quickly as possible, seconded by Councilman Britschgix and carried. <br />City Engineer Jain stated that the following would be desirable divisions of the <br />project: <br />1. Upton to Vera, to westerly limits of school property. <br />2. Short streets between Alameda and Upton. <br />3. Proceed to redesign Alameda, and including portions of Vera Avenue and <br />Crompton Avenue with this section. <br />Councilman Britschgi moved that the City comply with the requests of the School <br />School District as outlined in their letter to the City Engineer, and the Resolution <br />submitted by them. Seconded by Councilman Royer and carried. <br />CITY ENGINEER JAIN'S REPORT ON PERCENTAGE OF COMPLETION OF IMPROVEMENT JOBS now under way <br />was read and discussed as a part of the problem of expediting requested improvement <br />projects. <br />CONDITION OF STREETS IN THE WESTWOOD TERRACE TRACTS was discussed by the City Engineer, <br />who advised that no portion of them had as yet been accepted by the City, nor would <br />any portion thereof be accepted until all streets conform to specifications. Mr. <br />R. M. Beshore appeared to express criticism of the condition of these streets, <br />stating that apparently defective materials had been used.. Mr. Geo. Shurson also <br />spoke on the subject of inferior construction or materials on this job. Mr. <br />Michael Douglas complained of irregular grade of gutter adjacent to his property, <br />causing a lake of water to collect. Also, Mr. Douglas expressed concern about the <br />size of catch basin opening at the corner of Carson Street and Crompton Avenue, <br />stating that in his opinion it was so largeas to constitute a hazard. Mr. Jain <br />assured him that it was standard size used by all Peninsula cities, but that it <br />would be checked to make sure there was no deviation from the standard size and <br />construction. <br />
