426 . Councilman Herkner spoke on the matter of the deficit raised by I,ir. Phelan. This eras followed by discussion. Councilman Weiss suggested the possibility of developing Perry Street Parking Lot and eliminating one store in the 2600 Block of Broadway to provide an entrance from Broadway. Councilman Granger stated that if the merchants want to have a parking lot, then the City should let them as ! long as they, the merchants, are going to pay the bill. Councilman Herkner stated that some of the remarks made by Councilman Weiss were correct and that is why he thinks they need the survey. Council -T+ j man Weiss stated that he was in favor of the survey but he was not in favor of the City advancing the C� ! money because there is a possibility that the City could not recover the money if the matter should not go through. Mr. Lebsack asked the Council for five minutes in order to present a proposed ordinance in regard to the sales tax. He stated that petitions had been circulated and so far they had 5799 signatures on the petition against the ordinance and 5784 on the petition against ! the charter amendment. Mr. Lebsack read his proposed ordinance delaying the effective date of ordinances ! numbered 843 and 844 levying a sales and use tax respectively in the City of Redwood City. He asked 1 1 ,the Council to consider this ordinance before the sales tax goes into effect on April lat. ! I Councilman Granger moved that the suggested ordinance offered by Mr. Lebsack be copied and a copy be furnished to each of the councilmen, the Mayor to call a study meeting to have the Council determine { the action to be taken, seconded by Councilman Weymouth and carried.
