The -,Mayor told the people in the audience that Palo Alto received $2259000 for the quarter from October through December. The motion carried on roll call with Councilman Weymouth and Mayor Royer voting NO and Councilman Weiss being noted absent. SUBDIVISION, and moved its adoption, mconded by Councilman Weymouth and carried on roll call, Councilman Weiss being noted absent. ON ROLL CALL the following were noted present: Councilman Floyd D. Granger, Sidney D. Herkner, Robert V. Spillers, Hiram Be Stout, Ray Weymouth, Mayor William H. Royer and City Clerk R. S. Dodge. ADOPT ORDINANCE SUSPENDING OPERATION OF SALES AND USE TAR ORDINANCE 843 AND 844. The affidavit of publication was ordered filed*' Councilman Spillers offered ORDINANCE 852, AN ORDINANCE CF THE CITY OF REDWOOD CITY PROVIDING FOR AN ELECTION ON`THE QUESTION OF 17HETHER OR NOT LOCAL SALES AND USE TARES SHALL BE LEVIED BY THE CITY OF REDWOOD CITY AND SUSPENDING THE OPERATION OF ORDINANCE NO. 843 (LOCAL SALES TAX) AND ORDINANCE N0. 844 (LOCAL USE TAX) and moved its adoption, seconded by Councilman Herkner. The Clerk read the title of the ordin;nee. Councilman Granger stated that he wanted the minutes to show that he was of the opinion that the sales tax is the only equitable way for the City to obtain the needed revenue. 'He was only going along, with this ordinance because it would give the people a chance to vote on the matter. The Mayor asked the City Attorney E questions in regard to the motion. He asked Mr. Davies if the people voted in favor of taking the affir— mative on the tax, would he file the petition on the Charter. Mr. Davies stated that he will not file the petition if that is the wish of the people. Mr. Davies indicated that he will keep the petitions himself VTM in answer to the question raised by Councilman Granger. Mr. Lebsack stated that he had inquired about a LIM title company holding the petitions and they indicated they did not desire to act as a depository. This was followed by discussion. The motion carried on roll call with Councilman Weymouth and Mayor Royer voting NO and Councilman Weiss being noted absent. City Manager Rolison stated that it was his opinion that the $1.00 deposit should be refunded to the merchants who paid the fee for the sales tax permit. The City Attorney asked that he be allowed to check into this matter. Councilman Spillers moved that the City Manager be authorized to return the $1.00 deposit on the l
