1
32
by Councilman Royer and carried unanimously on roll call.
Discussion on County Sales Tax. Mayor Weymouth asked permission of the Council to sign the following letter
addressed to Wallace Benson, Chairman for the Council of Mayors of San Mateo County
In response to your correspondence of October lu, 1960 concerning the proposed county -wide Bradley -Burns
Sale's Tax Law, I have been authorized by my Council to express our position as follows:
1. Redwood City made its position clear on a County -wide tax on February 25, 1957 when it adopted
a Bradley -Burns type uniform sales tax ordinance for the City of Redwood City. By its terms
the ordinance will go into effect automatically upon adoption by the Board of Supervisors of
a countywide Bradley -Burns type sales tax ordinance.
2. Our present ordinance levies a rate of 95% of 1% on all taxable sales in Redwood City, leaving
a 5% Colony retention. Under these circumstances, it is our feeling that we are already on
record in favor of a maximum 5% County retention.
3. We wi§h to further advise you that the citizens of Redwood City rejected a local sales tax by
majority vote at the April 1960 Municipal Election. 11
Councilman Granger moved that the Mayor be authorized to sign the letter and send it'to Mr. Benson (MINUTE
ORDER #60-214), seconded by Councilman Herkner.
