Item No. 5 (continued) <br />Pastor Stephen Rice, 334 Nimitz, representing the Clergy Association, <br />supported the acquisition of the building for a much - needed shelter in <br />Redwood City and urged approval, stating that the Association will be <br />available to offer services. <br />Kathleen Mahany, 1026 Vera, representing Advisory Council on Women (ACW) read <br />a letter of May 28, 1986, from Bonnie Scheinman, Chair of ACW, in support of <br />the acquisition of the building and of the program. <br />Susan Gardner, 1756 Broadway, resident of the subject building, questioned <br />whether she will be able to find similar housing at comparable rent and <br />objected to the displacement of present tenants. In response to question, <br />Ms. Gardner acknowledged that she has been aware the building was for sale <br />and that relocation counseling and payment are being offered to tenants. <br />Housing Coordinator Church stated for the record that the housing relocation <br />payment will be made even if the tenant does not find replacement housing <br />within three months, if the tenant is making an effort to do so. <br />Louis Francisco, 1756 Broadway, objected to the displacement of tenants and <br />presented a petition from present tenants asking that the building not be <br />acquired for the shelter program. <br />Peter Hanna, 1756 Broadway, said he has questions about the tenant relocation <br />compensation and availability of comparable rentals, stating he opposes the <br />program. <br />Frank Capaldi, 2200 El Camino Real, described the circumstances which had <br />left his family homeless, stating he has been assisted by The Salvation Army <br />and urged approval of the acquisition so that the shelter can be established. <br />Virqinia Geller, 3648 Jefferson Avenue, League of Women Voters (LWV) read a <br />letter from Madeline Ingram, President, and Maben Clark, Action Director of <br />the LWV South San Mateo Council, urging approval of the acquisition of the <br />building and of the project. <br />(Council recessed from 9:35 to 9:50 p.m.) <br />Yvette Haworth, 3 Twin Dolphin Drive, representing the Redwood City /San Mateo <br />County Chamber of Commerce, read the letter of June 2, 1986, from Frank <br />Wentholt, Vice President, Governmental Relations Committee, inquiring about <br />details of the program and acquisition of the building. <br />Maben Clark, 1058 Ringwood, Menlo Park, Co -Chair of the San Mateo County <br />Housing Task Force, read her letter of May 27, 1986 urging approval of the <br />project. <br />Steve Krajcir, 850 Coleman, Menlo Park, Emergency Assistance Program Director <br />of The Salvation Army, reported on emergency housing needs of the Community <br />as determined from his experience. <br />Reg.Mtg. <br />6/2/86 <br />Page 5 MINUTE BOOK NO. 46 <br />Page No. 281 <br />
