4. Forty -Niner Committee Recommendation (301 -06)
Reports: Committee 9/5 and 9/8/86
City Attorney Schricker stated that Councilman Stangel has disqualified
himself from participating on the discussion and voting on the subject item.
Councilman Stangel left the Council chambers.
Former Conqressman Rover, Chairman of the 49ers Committee presented the
Committee report, stating the Committee urges Council to make every effort to
keep the 49ers in the City at their present location and to authorize and
encourage the Mayor, City staff and two Committee members to negotiate
immediately with the 49ers for a new long -term lease. Mr. Royer described
the concept for terms of agreement which the Committee supports.
In response to questions, Mr. Royer said that the Parks and Recreation
Director and Commission have the expertise to suggest replacement facilities
for Little League and others, noting that the Committee believes the likely
outcome is better facilities for them and that cost and benefit figures have
not yet been developed, but that City costs should be minimal and that the
49ers will invest in facilities to be constructed.
Georqe Andres, 6 Eagle Hill Terrace, President of the Highlanders Little
League, said they use the Kiwanis Field which is proposed to be used by the
49ers, and he is concerned about the convenience of any new location of the
Little League field.
In response to request for information, Councilman Greenalch said that the
City does not now have any regulation size Little League field.
Councilman Bury, Kiwanis Club member, requested that the name of the Kiwanis
Field be retained, in any event, in recognition of the past efforts of the
Kiwanis Club which raised the funds to build it some years ago.
Don Davis, 3576 Altamont, active in Little League and AYSO Soccer, said new
playing fields should not be from existing park property and suggested tough
negotiations with the 49ers corporation would be effective. Mr. Davis said
he would like to have the 49ers remain, but noted the increasing need for
sports fields.
Ron Exley, 1512 Roberta Drive, San Mateo, Director of the Police Youth Club
(PYC) said the Board is anxious to cooperate, stating their concerns relate
to cost of conversion of the present 49ers facility for PYC use and interim
location.
Al Jacot, 251 Alexander, Highlands Little League, asked that more regulation
size fields for Little League in the same areas as at present be developed.
Gaile Molnar, 2563 Briarfield, Little League parent, said there should be no
compromise at the expense of children with regard to playing fields, noting
that there appear to be increasing numbers of young children in the City.
Reg.
