Item No. 4 (continued)
Tom Nolan, San Mateo County Supervisor, and member of the 49ers Committee
said that Committee commitment to Little League is strong and the expectation
is that better fields will be found; that approval of the concept for
agreement is all that is requested; and that the Committee is willing to
continue working to keep the 49ers here.
Diane Howard, 415 Portofino, San Carlos, existing President of the Highlander
Little League, would like a guarantee that there will be fields available for
the exclusive use of Little League.
Nita Spangler, 970 Edgewood Road, said the City is short on recreation
property and suggested the 49ers are not paying a fair amount for the land
they use and that Council should consider the impact of any loss of parkland.
Mrs. Spangler also suggested that at some point it might be desirable to ask
for an advisory vote on the matter and noted legal questions may exist
regarding private use of public land.
Mr. Royer said that there is nothing in the recommendation to suggest that
city land would be given away, but rather that the 49ers building would
revert to the City and that the Committee is well aware of lease
requirements.
Mr. Hemmis, 1640 Lark, opposed any attempts to keep the 49ers at the expense
of children and the taxpayers.
Joe Eddie Trujillo, resident, urged that children's recreation needs be the
first consideration.
In response to questions, Parks and Recreation Director Griffiths said that
Recreation Supervisor Wooten can provide Little League needs information;
that recreation facilities are stretched to full use; and that investigation
time is needed.
M /S: Britschgi /Greenalch to accept the report of the 49ers Committee and
continue exploring the Committee recommendations.
(Recommendations for terms of agreement at present site are:
1) The 49ers be given exclusive use of their present facilities and playing
fields, including the old Mitchell field.
2) The 49ers be given exclusive use of Kiwanis Field and the Police Youth
Club site for the purpose of constructing a new administrative office
building.
a) Present 49ers facility to revert to the City for joint use of the
Police Youth Club and the City of Redwood City.
b) Police Youth Club to be provided with an interim use building while
the 49ers build their new facility.
MINUTE BOOK NO. 46
Page No. 378
Reg.Mtg.
9/8/86
Page 5
— -- - -- -i
