2. Presentation by Paula Barrino, South County Summer Jobs <br />for Youth <br />Ms. Barrino described the services offered by the program, which is sponsored <br />by the Private Industry Council under the auspices of the Youth Employment _ <br />Program; and which is in its third year of operation; provided statistics of <br />applications and placements, and urged support of the program by the city and <br />community leaders through contributions, jobs, and donations of goods and - <br />services, for their Marine World fund- raising project, which will be an <br />auction to be held on July 22, 1985. <br />3. Presentation of Tree City U.S.A. Award by Steven R. <br />Scott, State Department of Forestry <br />Director of Parks and Recreation Griffiths introduced Mr. Scott, who noted <br />that for the fourth year in a row, Redwood City has been designated as a <br />Tree City U.S.A.; that the National Arbor Day Foundation, of Nebraska, <br />annually honors cities which developed a forestry program, and that Redwood <br />City meets the four criteria for the award; the city must have a tree <br />department, there must be a community tree ordinance, an urban forestry <br />management plan, and there must be an Arbor Day celebration which would <br />include a tree planting ceremony. Mr. Scott then presented the award and a <br />flag to Mayor Britschgi, who accepted them on behalf of the City with thanks. <br />ORAL COMMUNICATIONS <br />1. John Cooper, 609 Lancaster, extended an invitation to the Council and staff <br />to the 3rd annual celebration and recognition for the Redwood City <br />Neighborhood Boards Program, stating that 27 new volunteers have been trained <br />as mediators. The event is open to the public and will take place on <br />Wednesday, May 15th at 7:30 p.m., at the Fair Oaks Community Center, 2600 <br />Middlefield Road. He described the achievements of the program participants <br />over the past year, with a mediation case load that has doubled over the <br />previous year; that five new neighborhood associations have been formed out <br />of the mediation services provided by the program, and commended Joe <br />Hardegree, Project Director, for his achievements. <br />REPORTS OF BOARDS, COMMISSIONS AND COMMITTEES <br />4.
