1. Presentation of Resolution of the Board of Supervisors <br />of San Mateo County re Marine World Africa U.S.A. (101 -03) <br />Supervisor Schumacher, San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, presented the <br />subject resolution and urged the Council to ask Campeau Corporation to delay <br />construction of their project until September 1985, to allow Marine World to <br />remain on the site for another year. Supervisor Schumacher noted that plans <br />and permits will not likely be completed until March 1985 in any case. He <br />also presented a similar resolution from the City of San Bruno and replied to <br />questions concerning his knowledge of recent history relating to the Marine <br />World move previously planned for 1982, and his suggestions for possible <br />Redwood City sites for the relocation. <br />Cong ressman L entos , 11th District, suggested that Marine World is a national <br />asset and re i that he has talked with the Canadian government, Mayor <br />Feinstein anu Congresswoman Burton of San Francisco in an effort to delay the <br />move of Marine World. Congressman Lantos urged Council to ask Campeau to <br />wait until September 1985, to commence construction in order to allow Marine <br />World to remain. <br />Megan Young, 300 Summit, student in a Marine World program, urged Council to <br />do whatever may be possible to keep Marine World open for the educational <br />experience of children in the area. <br />Lisa Patterson. 5247 Elmwood, San Jose, employee of Marine World described <br />the relationships of animals and trainers, stating Marine World is important <br />to the community. <br />Dr. Laurie Gage, 400 Kings Mountain Road, Woodside, zoo veterinarian, <br />described animal moves, noting there is less risk to trained than to wild <br />animals, and stating that Marine World has extensive facilities to maintain <br />aquatic animals which would have to be maintained, if the sea mammals <br />remain. <br />Jim Bonde, 706 Scott, said that the Campeau plan for the site would not allow <br />them to work around the aquatic animals. He suggested the site plan might be <br />revised. <br />Ron Mason, 706 Scott, said that parks like Marine World are essential to <br />protect and insure survival of certain animals and suggested Marine World is <br />needed more than additional office space. Mr. Mason acknowledged that he has <br />not heard any Council member state that he or she did not regret the move of <br />Marine World and that he has heard of the park's need for financing. <br />Laurie Coen 1134 Lisa Lane, Los Altos, teacher of natural sciences working <br />with students at Marine World, urged Council to do whatever may be possible <br />to keep Marine World another year. <br />Ruby Petersen, Mill Valley, "Miss Nancy" of "Romper Room ", said that Marine <br />World is a wonderful family educational park and asked that Council attempt <br />to get one more year of operation. <br />Reg.Mtg. <br />8/27/84 <br />Page 2 <br />MINUTE BOOK NO. 45 <br />Page No. 118 <br />
