Matters of Committee Interest
8.a. Committee Member Updates

Planning Manager Turner brought up the topic of ad hoc committees. He stated that in terms
of setting up small group meetings, Staff thinks that’s appropriate and encouraged,
particularly for topics that need more research and discussion that could be made for
recommendation to the City Council. He stated they should avoid setting any formal policies
without discussing with City Council. He also stated that Staff often helps with research in
these small groups, so the HHCC should be mindful of staff time and resources.

Chair Montalvo asked if he wanted to go ahead with this ad hoc committee now or wait until
the retreat.

Committee Member Madigan stated that the idea of one ad hoc committee would be to
discuss the issue of the “missing middle” for housing options in Redwood City and then bring
that information to the committee for discussion and recommendation to the City Council. He
stated it would be nice to open that committee up to outside groups and innovators to get
their ideas and opinions. He stated he would be careful with staff to ensure that the work
does not become burdensome to them.

Committee Member Hiester asked for a bit of background on this issue.

Planning Manager Turner stated that about a year ago the City Council directed the HHCC to
go out into the community and solicit ideas that the City Council should focus on going
forward. He stated of the ideas that came out of that effort were researched by the committee
and submitted to City Council and they selected items to move forward.

Committee Member Piazza stated that they need to look into the divide between affordable
and accessible housing.

Planning Manager Turner stated that it’s important for committee to look into those topics so
they are able to speak on them later.
