This pro-
posed section of Bay Trail would connect existing trails in the
area. Currently, hikers and bicyclists must travel on Embarca-
dero Road amidst heavy vehicle traffic for a quarter of å mile.
This shared section of road leads to the public landfill and re-
cycling center, and vehicles here are typically large trash haul-
ing trucks. This is the last segment of the Bay Trail running
through Palo Alto that needs to be completed. The project in-
cludes the design and installation of three interpretive panels
along the new trail segment. The City of Palo Alto will use the
California Conservation Corps to construct the trail segment.

City of Alameda, Wind River-Marina Village Bay Trail
Connector ($41,700): The proposed project lies along the City
of Alameda's northern waterfront. Using the California Con-
servation Corps, the City proposes to construct a 4O0-foot con-
crete trail connection along the shoreline. When completed,
this segment will create 1.5 miles of continuous Bay Trail.

City of Benicia, Bay Trail Access ($50,000): The City of Be-
nicia includes three additions to the Bay Trail. Two segments
will extend existing portions of the Trail at Matthew Turner
Park and at the Benicia Marina. The third project would im-
prove the public access facilities at the foot of E Street by add-
ing a bench and directional and interpretive signage.

City of Martinez, Bay Trail Alignment and Preliminary De-
sign Study for Pedestrian Bridge at Martinez Regional
Shoreline Park ($80,000): The City of Martinez, in conjunc-
tion with the East Bay Regional Park District and the Union
Pacific Railroad, proposes to prepare a study for the design of a
one-mile long segment of the Bay Trail through Martinez Re-
gional Shoreline Park, and to develop preliminary plans for a
bicycle and pedestrian bridge crossing over the railroad tracks
on the eastern side of the park.

All of the proposals recommended for Conservancy approval
include matching funds, ranging from $14,000 to over $1 mil-
lion for the Redwood City trail and bridge project.

Coastal Conservancy $480,000
Matching funds from grantees $3,150,360

Coastal Conservancy funds for these projects come from the
General Fund appropriation for the Coastal Initiative.

III-8
