4A/ I~

off the new altemate calendar. This results in many students being off school at non-traditional
times, generally during October and April. We would like to work jointly with the school district
to serve students during these intersession breaks. Programs will be focused in two areas:
helping identified students that are below grade level improve academically and providing rec-
richment opportunities that are similar to traditional summer activities to non-remedialleamers.

Noon-time Recreation Programs:

Currently many students do nothing during their lunch break. Working at the school district
campuses during their lunch breaks would improve student services in two ways: providing
structured activities, contests and leagues for interested students during the lunch hour. This
would give city staff an opportunity to promote departmental activities, make strong student
connections and leam more about student interests within the city. The estimated costs for
the noon-time programs will be approximately $20,000.00

After-School Grant Opportunities:

We are currently pursuing grant opportunities to expand the academic enrichment programs.
The Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department in conjunction with the school
district are applying for After-school Safe Neighborhood Partnership Fund for programs at Fair
Oaks, Selby Lane and Hawes School. Additionally, 21st Century Leaming Grants are being
requested to provide additional programs at Hoover and Taft School and start-up programs at
Hawes, Fair Oaks, John Gill and possibly Roosevelt Schools. Some of these grants may
require some supplemental city funds, however the funding amount dependant on the level of
funding received from the granting sources.

Teen Programs

We would also like to meet the needs of high school students who are requesting a high
school drop-in center/coffeehouse and a growing youth population of athletes interested in
skating and skateboarding and BMXing.

Other Programs

The Council should also be aware that the Department is not the only provider of youth programs in the
area. Other providers include: Police Activities League, Sheriffs Activities League, the Boys and Girls
Club, the YMCA, Peninsula Covenant Community Center, Young Latino Leaders and many volunteer
run organizations such as Little League and AYSO soccer. Lastly, the Library provides Homework
Assistance Centers at its locations. A copy of the Youth Master Plan developed by many of these
groups for Redwood City is enclosed for your consideration.

Please feel free to contact Corinne Centeno at 780-7254 or Julie Hannon at 780-7316 with any
questions.

.
