~c. -\ ~

2.1.6 Photographs and Imagery as Textures

Imagery, such as black and white digital orthophoto quads, can be very useful in the
development of the 3D database for the positioning of the 3D features. Other imagery, such as
photos of existing buildings and signage, can be used as texture and applied to features to
enhance familiarity and real world context of the scene. These data and techniques will be
used throughout the simulation model.

2.2

Runtime Simulation

A runtime application is proposed that will allow operator interaction to move the eyepoint
through the simulated database in an unconstrained fashion. Additionally, under this proposal,
we will provide a runtime capability to execute predetermined "canned" path scenarios. One
pre-programmed path will be provided; details for the paths will be coordinated with
Redwood City personnel during development of the model.

2.2.1 Operator Control

Operator control of the runtime simulation will be provided for the following:

Keyboard selection and mouse control for walk, drive, fly motion through database.
Walk, drive - clamp eyepoint to constant height above ground.
Select and launch pre-programmed paths.
Set environment conditions including visibility, clouds and time of day.

2.3

Deliverables

2.3.1 Software

Software deliverables for the simulation will consist of visual database files for installation on
a single workstation, a Vega runtime license, and one preprogrammed path scenario for the
simulation. Deliverable media is CDROM.

2.3.2 Hardware
No computer hardware is being provided by MPI under this proposal.

2.4 GIS Support

Multigen Paradigm, Inc. is actively pursuing the development of 3D GIS products as well as
the support for GIS data. As a Business Development Partner for ESRI we have focused our
GIS development efforts thus far with their products.

Currently we are under contract to build a 3D GIS application for urban planning/urban
design. This program, linked to Arc View GIS, will allow a user to build a virtual town from
2D GIS data and play various development scenarios while measuring both short and long
term impacts. Our tools will create 3D geometry from the 2D GIS data, populate the visual
database with the 2D and 3D data, and write to OpenFlight. The program is due for release in
the second half of2000.

The database to be developed for Redwood City under this proposal can form the nucleus for
future modeling efforts, such as extending the overall geographic area of coverage.
