213

Commissioner Pound did not receive the Summer Recreation Schedule. The Park & Rec-
reation Department will be evaluating the mailing before the next program. Commissioner
Pound will take a poll at the Homeowners Association ~eeting to try to determine who did/
did not receive the schedule.

Commissioner Pound indicated that she had heard many compliments on the way the flowers
are rotated in Redwood City.

In-Service Training. The question~ was raised why there are no Black umpires. Com-
missioner Guida could not remember many Blacks working for the Summer Recreation Pro-
gram. He felt the Blacks should be better informed regarding recruitment. Mr. Weeks
indicated that they had been informed and that there are Blacks working for the depart-
ment but that recruitment was difficult. It was hoped that through the Community Center
Program greater contact can be made. Counselor In-Training Programs were mentioned
where Blacks can train as junior counselors and then (after experience is gained)
compete for the positions of Counselor and Leader. Most contended that the problem was
with recruitment. Commissioner Haynes felt that a change-over would occur when the Center
is completed. He indicated many Blacks may not feel comfortable competing in the "White"
atmosphere.

Peppermint Patty is a great success according to Commissioner Guida who attended open-
ing day ceremonies and wi tnessed large parental 'attendance.

The Junior Golf Tournament was discussed by Commissioner Knecht and the Awards dinner
was mentioned, which will be held June 20, Emerald Hills Golf Course.

Commissioner Guida moved to accept the reports, seconded by Commissioner Haynes; carried.

ROUND TABLE

Commissioner Weintraub indicated that she had been-at Stulsaft Park for a Little League
dinner and had noticed that the restrooms were in abominable condition. Mr. Weeks
indicated that this had already been noticed by staff and that schedules are now out to
clean up this problem. Mr. Weeks also requested that as soon as any Commissioner noticed
any problem to call him immediately so that the problem could be acted upon quickly.

Commissioner Knecht indicated his delight in Mr. Fales as City Manager. He went on
to say that this is the first City Manager who has really cooperated with the Com-
mission--and all Commissions--and Commissioner Knecht felt that this type of an attitude
would really get results.

The donation for the Red Morton Memorial from Mrs. Richard Imperiale, Corresponding
Secretary of the Peninsula Hills Jr. Women's Club, was mentioned and commended.

Commissioner Pound mentioned the "Pilot" (community newspaper of Redwood Shores in cir-
culation for approximately three years) and indicated that she had written an article
which will be out this month. The article was written in an attempt to close the gap
between Redwood Shores and Redwood City. Commissioner Pound felt it would be helpful if
she wrote about Park and Recreation and what was available. She also indicated that she
wanted to interview the staff at a later date.

Belmont Sailing Class was mentioned. It was indicated that the future classes will be
coordinated. With regard to the various jurisdictional matters relative to the use of
the waterways in the Redwood Shores area, it was indicated that Chief McDonald had
been contacted relative to enforcement problems. It would appear that the Police
Department can exercise enforcement; however, it was pointed out by Chief McDonald
that there are very few provisions in the City ordinances relative to the waterway use.
It is felt that a combined effort needs to be exercised by the Park & Recreation Com-
mission, the Park & Recreation Department and the Police Department to arrive at use

.. -- ----

----------- ------------- -----------
