237

REPORTS

.11

tTEM 1 - Staff Presentatl~~ - S~ort~ ~I ~~aE~c~wfro$ram: ~pe!v!s~! Woote~

Supervisor Bill Wooten gave a brief outline on his areas of responsibility. The goal
of his section is to provide the opportunity for the citizens of the community to parti-
cipate ~in a wide range of athletic and aquatic activities. These programs are avail-
able for everyone--male and female--as well as youth through adults.

Supervisor Wooten mentioned that a large protion of his time goes into working with
various sports organizations. This includes five Soccer organizations (juventis, A.Y.S.O.,
Hildalgo, Los Aguilas and L.A.S.S.O), four little leagues, the senior league, the Babe
Ruth League, Jo DiMaggio League and the American Legion in which much of his time goes
into meeting with le~gue Presidents, discussing common problems, assigning dates as to
when practices and games can be scheduled, assigning and scheduling all fields on an
equál basis, allowing usage of our facilities for registrations and meetings, recruit-
ing and training umpires and assigning the umpires to the various leagues on an equal
basis. He also works with new organizations that come to the Department for assistance.

The Section of Municipal Athletics and Aquatics is continually trying to be responsive
to the community for programs the community desires. For example, Adult and Teen Foot-
ball and Co-Ed Volleyball leagues were started this fall in response to the coomunity
request. The programs are continually evaluated and sometimes expanded, as Women's
Softball which had nine teams in the league last season and will be expanded to fourteen
teams fQr the coming season. The All-Sports Camp was also recently improved which added
a variety of sports to the former Instructional Baseball School.

The Aquatics program, although offered only during the summer, offers lessons from
Mother-Tot through Senior Life Saving. A diving class and a stroke and turn class are
also offered. Synchornized swim as well as a Competitive Swim Club is part of the pro-
gram and a special class for the retarded and handicapped is offered.

Recreation Superintendent Bill Paulson mentioned that Supervisor Wooten often must act
as a mediator between the various sports activities as the lack of facilities often
poses a problem of schedule.

Chairman Schenck thanked Supervisor Wooten for a fine report.

ITEM 2 :v!!o&ra~- Co~l,ttee Rß~orrt

The written report was discussed briefly. The next meeting is scheduled for November 21.

ITEM 3 - Commission Relations Committee

r I"1JJ ~lF' 1 -1 b.... rl5ll IU - J1 11 - _.111 ¿ L ....

The Commissioners Code of Ethics was discussed.

Objections were made to the following:

Page 29, Paragraph 3 - Commissioner Guida expressed the desire that minority reports
be heard also. It was pointed out that it was intended that Commissioners should
certainly express minority views but should not as a private citizen undercut a
Commissioner's report. It was suggested that the word IIfoster" in the last sentence
of paragraph 3 be changed to the word "promote."

Page 20, Paragraph 5 - Commissioner Guida felt that the wording should be clarified
so that it would not sound as though the Commissioners were relinquishing their
rights as private citizens. He felt he should be able to support certain political
issues as a citizen and not as a Commissioner and this paragraph should so clarify.

',-:'-:--"'---'---.--~---" ," ""__n. --. ...-.,-...,. .-.-. n.. - ..,_... ,..,. ... -..--.---------'-'...--"-. ._...""_..,-~.._- --"-~..._-_.__.. p"'-' .
