Commissioner Knecht felt Redwood City provided a program as good as, if not
better than, other cities for the girls. He felt there were other ßports in
which it has been difficult to generate any female interest.

.........

16

Commissioner Weintraub felt that time should not be taken to discuss the
matter and that the Committee could handle it and report their findings to the
Commission.

Commissioner Schenck felt this should be sent back to the Committee for
review. He also felt the Little League program should be exclusively for boys.
He felt there should be a separate hardball program for girls if they wanted to
play hardball.

Discussions took place and the audience was heard. The audience consisted
mainly of North Redwood Little League parents and they were opposed to allowing
girls to participate in the Little League Program. Following the discussion, the
vote was called for.

Ayes:

5 - Commissioners Knecht, Schenck, Weintraub, Pound, Rollins

Nays:

I - Commissioner Guida

Motion carried.

The matter will be referred to the Committee.

REPORT ITEM I - Staff Presentation - Community Leisure Services

Supervisor Don Burtz was introduced and welcomed. He gave a brief outline
of the Community Leisure Services section of the Recreation Division which included
a well-rounded program for girls and boys alike. Supervisor Burtz' section works
with the fifteen elementary schools and the three junior high schools in Redwood
City. They also handle special events, special education, day camp, wilderness
camp, etc. The programs stress having a good time and a good social interaction
rather than just winning and losing. The objectives are to have fun, learn
something new, wholesome use of leisure time, improve behavior, develop sports-
manship and good citizenship.

Commissioner Rollins felt the public was not aware of all the many events
offered by Redwood City. He suggested the Tribune print a calendar of events.

Chairman Schenck wanted to know if the programs are designed to deal with
unskilled children. He felt a common assumption was that the children are
already skilled.

Supervisor Burtz mentioned that leaders do work with children and make every
effort to involve children at all skill levels. Additionally, clinics are offered
to teach children specific skills.

REPORT ITEM 2 - Design & Development Committee

Chairman Schenck thanked Supervisor Burtz for his presentation and invited
him to contribute his ideas to the Commission.

Commissioner Weintraub reviewed the committee report and stated that the
committee meetings have been extremely interesting and profitable. The committee
has made great strides in deciding how to redevelop the first four neighborhood
parks along with making some very concrete suggestions to the consultant.
