in 1930 started the Marina and the philosophy was established that the Marina should
not become a burden on the taxpayer and should be user supported. Mr. Weeks felt
this was a sound basis for the Marina operation and every effort should be made
to keep it that way. The Marina is accumulating a reserve of about $180,000.

..-

-28

Commissioner Pound requested some information on expanding the Marina facility.
Leslie Salt pond was suggested. John Mackenhausen indicated it would probably
run close to $1,000,000 to take over that area and convert it. Dredging, access,
dockage, etc., would be excessive for the small area gained.

The Port area was also suggested and West Point. The Waterfront Committee in
their general planning had the West Point area in mind also. Mr. Weeks suggested
if the Commission or audience had any input or suggestions relative to the Marina
Operations, he would be pleased to receive them.

Commissioner Rollins mentioned the various leases in effect at the Marina. Mr.
Weeks felt some of these leases would soon be ready for review for additions,
changes, deletions, etc.

Ms. Marnie Huber requested more information regarding the Stanford Crew. Mr. Weeks
explained that the Crew is not a function of the University. It is a student
association and is backed and financed mostly by alumni. It is student organized
and student operated. The crew activities and space occupancy was discussed.
Mr. Weeks felt that the area may be needed when the Marina is upgraded. Com-
missioner Weintraub felt that the property should be enjoyed mainly by residents.
Mr. Weeks indicated that the Stanford Crew building is utilized mainly for storage
of Crew equipment and Crew operations. Commissioner Schenck suggested moving this
storage area to the Leslie Salt area or the SeaScouts area. Commissioner Weintraub
felt it was not the City's responsibility to find the Stanford Crew a storage area.
Chairman Guida felt the City should be concerned with the greatest good for the
greatest number of Redwood City citizens.

The budget was spoken to briefly by Mr. Weeks. The total budget is approximately
$63,000. The income is estimated around $105,300 and through June 92% is allocated.
The income from the Commercial Operations (Charlie Brown Restaurant, Howard's
Yacht Sales, etc.) is also a part of the total revenue received.

Chairman Guida expressed his thanks to the staff from the Commission as a body.
He felt the Commission was now informed about the Marina and have never had such
a comprehensive report before. He also thanked the Operational Policies Committee
for requesting the Commission to become informed.

Mr. Weeks felt it would be worthwhile to request the De~ign & Development Committee
to give some thought to the upgrading effort of the Marina. Chairman Guida
requested Commissioner Weintraub (Chairperson of the Design & Development Committee)
to put this item on their list of objectives.

Commissioner Rollins requested the Design & Development Committee to investigate
the adjacent property owned by Leslie Salt Company to see if it is possible to
expand the existing Marina operations in that direction. Mr. Weeks suggested
that the Waterfront Task Force, that will be assigned Marina studies, would also
be investig{l.ting this :~area. The Parks & Recreation Commission will undoubtedly
be a part of these task force studies.

AGENDA ITEM 3 - Discussion of Neighborhood Meetings - Stu1saft Park

Mr. Weeks indicated that the Department had requested publication of the announce-
ment for the neighborhood meeting two weeks in advance of the meeting but the

-,-- _n____--____--n______---- ---------------..---------- - - -______n_.._..__--..-..---- --- _...._----_.._-----------~ -_.~-- ----------

____0-.-_-- ------------

--------

t
