A Senior
nutritional program is offered which is run by EOC and handles meals for 100
Senior Citizens each day. The program also includes social activities for the
Seniors and transportation. Ten percent of the meals are permitted to be
carried out to Seniors who are unable to get to the Center.

The Center has three classrooms with the capacity of housing twenty-five
persons and are used for a variety of reasons including classes, meetings,
organizational usage, etc.

Also, at the Center is an arts and crafts room which is presently unequipped
due to a lack of funds. Further offered is a limited recreational program.
A televiSion is available which was donated by the Downtown Merchants and
two pool tables were purchased by the City of Redwood City. Also available
are a shuffleboard and a ping pong table.

-
I

Mr. Villasenor mentioned that the Center was never envisioned as a recrea-
tional facility, but when the facility was originally opened the youth in
the target area began coming to the Center in large quantities thinking
there would be activities offered for them. The facility does have a basket-
ball, volleyball, and handball court but there is not the staff available to
carry out extensive recreational activity, nor does the staff available have
any recreational background. Mr. Villasenor appealed to the various clubs
in the area in an effort to obtain some donated recreational equipment.
There are no organized activities available for the youth but they are pre-
sently utilizing the Center on a drop-in basis.

Mr. Villasenor next suggested the Commission tour the facility and a recess
was called at 8:20 PM. The meeting was called back to order at 8:35 PM,
and Mr. Villasenor asked if the Commission had any questions.

Commissioner Rollins wondered if it would be feasible to obtain a student
intern for the limited recreation program. This was discussed briefly and
Mr. Villasenor mentioned tha t he was aware of the intern program offered
at the California State University Colleges and that he had, in fact, dis-
cussed this possibility with Mr. Paulson. He stated he would be looking
into this program for the fall1975 semester. Mr. Villasenor also commented
that a proposal had been put together requesting that two recreation leaders
be funded for the Center out of the Manpower Training Program funds and this
is presently at the County level awaiting approval.

Mr. Weeks related that he had been talking with Mr. Villasenor about pro-
grams, training and needs and had appeared before the Center Advisory Board
December 6,1974 to clarify the Department's situation and solicit their
input. A Committee was appointed from the Advisory Board with Mr. Villasenor
and will meet with the Parks & Recreation Commission Program Committee to
discuss possible services the Department can offer commensurate with the
philosophy of the area as well as the financing available. Mr. Weeks further
stated the Community Development Program will have a significant impact on
the target area and out of that may grow additional park facilities, etc.,
though space for additional park facilities in the target area is very
critical and is mostly in County areas. Joint planning with the County was
mentioned as a goal of the Community Development Program.

, ,--~,.~~- --"--- ....., ,---..'"-..
